Sunday, Alexi was going to grill steaks, but it turned out we were out of charcoal. He prepared to cook them, instead, in a cast-iron skillet, while I put together a Caesar salad. As we worked, I noticed that, for the first time in forever, it seemed, it wasn't yet dark at that time of day.

Hello. It's nice to be back here; like unlocking the front door after a vacation and then stepping inside, and it smells just right, and the magazines on the table in the entryway are right where I left them, but now have a layer of dust. The wind is hard and fierce today.

Since we last spoke, I've sat through a dozen hockey practices and games, gone through a corn maze, seen this excellent movie, read my way through Elena Ferrante's outstanding series, and baked an applesauce cake. I watched a ladybug make its way along the window as I put it together.

post Labor Day
We’re home, after more than two weeks elsewhere. It’s a cool, breezy September day. Our flowers are still blooming. The first of the local apples are here. School starts tomorrow. I think we’re all ready to be back on a schedule; ready to work; hunker down;...

doing our living
We’re in autumn with both feet, though by midafternoon the windows are wide open. I don’t think I’ll ever get used to the surprise of heat we get late in the day throughout most of the fall, here. I did my trick-or-treating in moon boots when I was a kid. A...
