A successful criminal defense trial strategy has to provide the jury with an alternative explanation to what the prosecution is saying.
The prosecution is going to interpret the evidence to support the theory that you are guilty. Your defense cannot be just 'I'm a nice guy' or 'They are jealous of me', it must provide the jury with an alternative explanation of what occurred. You have no duty to provide any evidence of what occurred, or why the State has failed to prove your guilt. That does not mean however that you do not need to attack the basis of the State's argument or evidence...and donuts and balloons will not do it for you.
