Buddha said, “To find the answer to the mystery, I’m going to sit in one place until something happens.” And he was able to do this because he had the support of a cultural matrix: The doctor, the apothecary, the tradesman, the accountant, the cook. All took him seriously. Even if they could not minister to his needs, even if it wasn’t for any of them, they understood his quest. What he did was an acknowledged part of an accepted monastic tradition that goes way back in India, China, and before conquest, in Tibet.
