#STEMFactOfTheDay: There are no active volcanoes on the east coast of the United States. Nearly all volcanoes are located at tectonic plate boundaries and the closest plate boundary is in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, 3,000 miles away! In fact, the Mid-Atlantic Ridge is a chain of volcanoes stretching for thousands of miles. Iceland is an island in this chain of volcanoes. If you have “hopped the pond,” you have flown over the Mid-Atlantic Ridge! Too bad all that ocean water is in the way so you can’t see it from the window seat.

#STEMFactOfTheDay: A light year is a unit of distance, not time? It’s the distance that light travels in one year and is equal to six trillion miles. The closest star beyond our solar system, Alpha Centauri, is about four light years away. The closest galaxy, Andromeda (M31), is 2,500,000 light years away. So, the next time your child quotes Buzz Lightyear’s line from Toy Story, “To Infinity and Beyond!” you can explain what a light year is! http://earthsky.org/space/what-is-a-light-year
