What The Fur?

We here at What The Fur have been working hard to get next year’s convention on track, to make it bigger and better than any we’ve had before. And we’re less than a month from making all sorts of announcements. But, in the meantime, we’ve decided that we just can’t let something like this go without some kind of celebratory event.

So on Saturday July 30th, we would like to invite one and all to Montreal again, where we’ll be hosting the first ever Oh My Goodness… What The Fur Barbecue! (Or the OMG!WTF?BBQ!)

Starting at Noon, we’ll be holding a big BBQ party at Angrignon Park, where we will be cooking up hotdogs and burgers, maybe some ice cream, and all the funds raised through the sales will go straight into making What The Fur 2017 an amazing time for everyone! We’ll have games to play, featuring MonFur’s Melee!

And yes, we will also be taking registrations for next year’s convention.

This event will be rain or shine, so plan accordingly. Fursuits are definitely welcome, but if it’s raining it might not be the best of ideas.

================================

What The Fur Barbecue!

Before I get to the announcements, I would like to thank everyone for coming out to the OMG!WTF?BBQ! I hope everyone had a great time! I know I did! Thank you to the cooks who took over the grill from me, and thanks to Loopy especially for bringing the Melee gear! We have added over $200 to the convention funds for next year!

ANNOUNCEMENT TIME

What The Fur will officially be the weekend of July 28-30 2017!
We had to move our dates for a variety of reasons, but we hope that this will work for a lot more people, not being during the end of school, and not being so close to other conventions! So in 12 months we will be back!
We will be returning to the Holiday Inn Pointe-Claire once again.
And our theme for 2017: Getting Medieval! We don't yet have our Guest of Honour confirmed, but once we do, you can bet we will let everyone know!

We will soon update our website, and we will let you all know when regular pre-registration will be happening!

So thank you again to everyone who joined us yesterday, both at the park and in spirit!

It is with a heavy heart that I pass on to you news that longtime attendee and supporter of the convention, friend, and amazing person in the fandom, +JBadger Ratel (+Jay Woodbury) , passed away this morning. He lost his battle with cancer.
JBadger attended all but this year's What The Fur, last year even coming after having had surgery very soon before the convention. He was a staff member at Anthrocon.

The reason the schedule is almost complete, and not fully complete? The most wonderful item, Bradley's Epicurean Gastronomical Extravaganza, is being held at 6:30pm on Saturday the 21st in the exclusive Bordeaux room (which is totally not a secret underground bunker)!
We still have room at the BEGE! So if you'd like to come and have dinner with the GoH and others, let us know! The price is only $42, and it's a chance you don't want to miss as it will be held in the underground bunker... er... exclusive diningroom!

Day Pass Declassification.
Agents, you asked for it, and we had to wrangle hard to get the information you requested. After having to submit several forms - all in triplicate - here are the passes for individual day passes for What The Fur 2016:
Fri - $26
Sat - $32
Sun - $25

These prices are only valid at the door, and are considered the equivalent of a Regular membership. They can, however, be upgraded to a full pass at any time.

Good day, Agents!
We would like to bring your attention to something that has been reported to us as an omission.
Every year, our agency collects donations from all kinds of sources in order to support our charity of choice, the Ecomuseum. To date, agents just like you and I have managed to collect over $15,000. As a goal for this year, we want to bring that total to over $20,000. Should we reach our goals, there might just be [REDACTED], and [REDACTED][REDACTED] but of course, you all expected that.
If you cannot be in attendance at the convention, but still want to help us support the charity, please contact us at information@whatthefur.ca. We will happily accept donations vis the usual channels and safe-drops. And don't forget: [REDACTED]
Good luck, Agents.

Bonjour, agents!
Bonne chance, agents.

To calm the financial controversy...

Hello everyone.

Some people seem to be questioning What The Fur, and where the fees we collect from registrations go. There also seems to be several misconceptions about how a convention is run. I am going to clear a few things up, and let people see exactly what goes into the convention, and why the amounts quoted and the claims made on several posts are invalid and incorrect.

First, let me point out that not every cost is going to be listed. We’re still tallying the receipts from this year’s event. Even buying Duct Tape gets accounted for. But these are general numbers that I currently have access to:

Hotel costs: $17815.84
(This is by far the largest category of expense. And every year it gets more expensive.)

Audio-visual rentals: $1609.65
Food (Chocolate Social): $475.00
(there are some pennies involved, but that’s not important)

Camera and photography: $244.89
Guest of Honour (hotel room): $614.08
Advertising: ~$2000.00
(Web, banner, business cards, flyers, posters, dealer tables at other conventions)

T-shirts: $1295.65
Conbooks: $912.21
Registration (Badges, computers, paper, ink): $1659.78
Other equipment purchases: $103.00

Total expenses: $26730.10
(Still getting the accurate total, but just what I wrote up above)

Now, total income from registrations: $21589.18

For a total loss of: $5140.92

Why so little from registrations? Keep in mind that I am giving approximate values, as Paypal and Credit Card transactions have fees we have to pay on each one. Also, we have 4 different registration periods, with discounts of up to $15 depending on when someone registers.
-Dealer helpers do not pay for their entry (that’s 18 people)
-Regular @ ~$40 to ~$55: 167
-Sponsor @ ~$70 to ~$85: 51
-Patron @ ~$140 to ~$150: 16
-Dealers @ ~$70 to ~$120: 40
-Day passes, Dance passes @ ~$12 to ~$32: 61

And this does not include the over $2100 for charity.

So, as opposed to the statement that we’re walking away with tens of thousands of dollars in our pockets, I am personally paying thousands to give you all a good weekend.

I hope this helps explain things.

As someone who's run cons, I'm actually surprised you've managed to actually run the show you do within that budget (well, technically you don't, but I digress). I'm assuming that your hotel costs are tied to room block bookings, how're those looking?

Good day, Agents.

I am writing you this message in the hopes that I might share my thoughts on the convention that we held from May 20th to 22nd at the Holiday Inn Pointe-Claire. There is some information that I am sure you are waiting to hear, and I know that I am wanting to share with you all.

First and foremost, allow me to share with you our accomplishments. On the topic of attendance, 439 agents descended on Montreal, making this the largest convention of its type to be held on this island ever. Our annual Fursuit Parade culminated in a total of 77 fursuiters. That’s an amazing 17% of the whole convention! For the Ecomuseum, our charity, we raised $2,194.73. And though we didn’t reach our goal for this year, every cent raised means that much more to be put towards the welfare and care of the animals at the Ecomuseum. I couldn’t be more proud to be a part of such an amazing and giving community. This puts What The Fur’s total donations to the Ecomuseum at over $17,500. That’s astounding!

As many of you have been asking, here are some of the links to all of the photos that we have. We would also like to ask that if any of you have photographs that you would like to share, please let us know!

Moving on to other business, I want to put out a very big and heart-felt thank you to each and every one of you. From the veteran con-goers to the newly arrived first time attendees, you all make What The Fur what it is: home. Seeing all of the smiling faces, the friends hugging and having a good time, the fursuiters and artists, the DJs and the gamers, it reminds me of the reason that we – the staff and volunteers – do this every year. Seeing old friends to making hundreds of new ones is just a part of the convention for us.

And further on that, as Chairperson for What The Fur, I have to say that those that deserve all of the thanks are the ones who put in the hard work to make everything happen and to bring it all together. All of the staff and volunteers. You are beyond compare. There are too many names to name so I will refrain from trying, but suffice it to say that What The Fur isn’t my convention. The convention is theirs. The convention is yours. So I want to thank you. You who are reading this and having those flashbacks to one of the best weekends of the year. You who have been a part of something great. You who made this small little thing a place to call home. Thank you. And to help make things even better, I ask that each and every one of you follow this link to our survey, and let us know exactly what you liked and didn’t, and how we can make things better: http://rga.la/WTF16_Survey

Over the next few weeks, the staff and I will be still working. We will be putting together plan for next year, and as soon as we have things solidified we will announce it and let you know. I would love to make the announcements right here and now but there are just a few more redacted documents that need to be filed away before we’re ready for that. But what I can say, unequivocally, is that yes, we will be looking forward to seeing you all again in 2017.
When we all come home again.

On behalf of the whole team here at What The Fur, I will close by giving you all of our most sincere thanks.

Feli
Agent 002 - Chairperson, What The Fur

Good morning agents.

As we are now the 2nd of May, this means a few things happened overnight.
1) We closed pre-registration for Sponsor and Patron levels.
2) We have completed the ordering of shirts.
3) Pre-registration is STILL available for Regular memberships, however the price has increased to $55.
4) We have, as promised, posted our day-pass rates on the website.
5) Posted our hours for Registration.

Understand that the Thursday hours for badge pickup for Pre-Registered Agents is dependent on our timely arrival at the hotel. As the convention does not actually begin until Friday, the times for Thursday may vary.

From now until May 8th at midnight, you can still pre-register for Regular memberships, and the hotel is still offering our preferred room rate, depending on availability of rooms.

Later today we will be posting our preliminary schedule to the website.

So visit www.whatthefur.ca for all of the details on your mission.

What The Fur May 23-25 2014, Montreal, QC, Canada
Introduction
What The Fur is Quebec's only full furry convention. What is What The Fur? Why the name? those are all excellent questions.

What The Fur was started as an idea following the end of the C-ACE conventions in Ottawa. Some of the staff of the convention, and some of the long-time attending folks didn't want the good times to end. So the thought came that a new convention should be formed. A convention that focussed more on the Furry side of things than C-ACE had. And thus was born WTF?. It has taken a few years, and quite a lot of work, but here we are.

What exactly is What The Fur? We're possibly the best furry convention in North America. We're not too busy, not too relaxed. We have a little bit of something for everyone.
