Just released a new blog on my site summarising my current views on what's happening on the climate issue globally. It's generating a lot of reaction (of all types!) so clearly I've pressed a hot button for many people.

Love to hear what others think.

I saw your video clip  "Climate Change - Paul Gilding - The Great Disruption" and I was struck by your comment that "it's not too late and it won't be too late fork 10 or 12 years" and I was wondering 2 things, the first where you got that that conclusion and the amount of time we have to fix things, and the second is if you've come across Guy McPherson's work particularly http://guymcpherson.com/2013/01/climate-change-summary-and-update/  in which he states:

"On a planet 4 C hotter than baseline, all we can prepare for is human extinction (from Oliver Tickell’s 2008 synthesis in theGuardian). According to an informed assessment of BP’s Energy Outlook 2030, published in January 2013, global average temperature of Earth will hit the 4 C mark in 2030."

I'm wondering if this kind of information might have changed your take on our prospects for long term survival.

Thanks very much for the video, sorry it took me so long to find it -- I would truly love to believe in the continuation of humankind, but that belief must be grounded in fact.  Any light you could shed on this would be greatly appreciated.

I'm liking TED as a vehicle for getting the message out. Over 100,000 views of my talk in the first 24 hrs! Thanks for everyone's help in getting it around the place, most appreciated.

Thanks for your hard work in writing your book the great Disruption, it was thought provoking and gave me some small hope that maybe we will not be doomed completely.

Paul, Interesting reflections. I am currently reading Tali Sharot's The Optimism Bias - The Tour of the Irrationally Positive Brain http://www.time.com/time/health/article/0,8599,2074067,00.html & http://www.amazon.com/Optimism-Bias-Irrationally-Positive-Brain/dp/0307378489 and am also a huge fan of Sherry Turkle's Alone Together TEDxUIUC - Sherry Turkle - Alone Together & http://alonetogetherbook.com/ TEDxUIUC - Sherry Turkle - Alone Together

These resources point to the fact that the end of your post is accurate. I sense your new book will be called The End of Optimism.

Warm regards,
Jennifer

I'm still here in Long Beach, California at TED 2012 but the talk I did at the opening session is now on line. It created quite a stir amongst this community of people who are very concerned about sustainability but includes many enthusiastic proponents of technology as the solution to all our problems.

James Hansen also did a great presentation today on the latest climate change science and his personal journey from scientist to activist/scientist.

Tonight Jim and I will debate some of the "techno-optimists" on whether technology alone will prevent the crisis we see emerging.

Take a look, tell your network, let me know what you think.
