How to Make New Crayons from Old Ones

This craft how-to shows kids making cool, giftable crayons from old crayola crayon bits.

Great upcycling craft activity for kids, adults and teachers. To read the post that goes with this video and more photos of different shaped crayons, visit

Adult supervision required - use caution when using an oven.

Step 1: Remove any paper from left over crayon bits or broken stumps. Bits should be an inch or smaller. (You can also cut up new crayons if you like!)

Step 2: Place crayon bits in a non-stick or silicone muffin tin (heart shaped or mini muffin pans or chocolate molds work great, too). Here is where the creativity comes in. Mix colors to create cool effects unless you want a "monochromatic" (Don't know what this word means? Click on it and you'll see a definition.) look. Fill tins or molds at least 1/2 way up with broken crayon bits.

Step 3: Ask an adult to place in a pre-heated 200 degree oven.

Step 4: After 15 minutes, check your project. Have an adult remove pan from oven as soon as all bits are liquified — it should only take about 15 minutes or less depending on your oven.

Step 5: Let muffin pan cool -- crayons will solidify and shrink, then pop right out when their temperature cools because of their waxy make up.

Step 6: Marvel at your beautiful new recycled crayons. Draw something with them or wrap them with a ribbon and gift to friends. We keep ours in a glass mason jar.
