AHA CPR Classes for Our Community

Sterling Rescue now regularly offers American Heart Association (AHA) CPR and First Aid classes. Our instructors are AHA certified to teach classes in Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers, Heartsaver® CPR/AED/First Aid, and Family and Friends® CPR that also include operation of automated external defibrillators (AED). All pre-scheduled classes are held in the Sterling Cascades Rescue/Fire Station's training room located at 46700 Middlefield Drive, Sterling, VA 20165. Courses for persons seeking a credential: (a two-year credential is awarded upon successful completion of the Skills Demonstration and Written Test (as applicable))

Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers (4.5 hours)

The Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers course is designed to provide a wide variety of healthcare professionals (doctors, nurses, emergency medical technicians, etc) the ability to recognize several life-threatening emergencies, provide CPR, use an AED, and relieve choking in a safe, timely and effective manner.

The course covers key changes in basic life support that reflect the new 2010 American Heart Association Guidelines for CPR, 1- and 2-Rescuer CPR and AED for adult, child and infant, bag-valve-mask techniques, and relief of choking.

The course is approximately 4.5 hours in length and includes skills practice, skills testing, and a written examination. The course is video based and led by an instructor who facilitates and verifies skills proficiency.

Students will be provided with a student manual (with a Pocket Reference Card) and an AHA certification card that is valid for two (2) years. Note: cards will be mailed within 30 days of the course completion.

Heartsaver® CPR/AED/First Aid (4-6 hours)

Heartsaver® CPR/AED/First Aid teaches students critical skills needed to respond to and manage first aid, choking or sudden cardiac arrest emergency in the first few minutes until emergency medical services (EMS) arrives. Students learn skills such as how to treat bleeding, sprains, broken bones, shock and other first aid emergencies. This course also teaches adult CPR and AED use and covers key changes reflected in the new 2010 American Heart Association Guidelines.

This course is offered in two formats:
(1) Heartsaver® CPR/AED that covers adult CPR, choking, and AED use and is 4 hours in length and includes skills practice and skills testing.

(2) Heartsaver® CPR/AED/First Aid covers everything in (1) and adds child/infant CPR and choking as well as basic First Aid. This course is 6 hours in length and includes skills practice and skills testing.

Each course is video based and led by an instructor who facilitates and verifies skills proficiency. There is no examination for this class.

Students will be provided with a student manual (with a Pocket Reference Card) and an AHAcertification card that is valid for two (2) years. Note: cards will be mailed within 30 days of the course completion.

Courses for the general public: (a class participation card is given at the end of the class, but is not considered a "credential.")

Family & Friends® CPR (3 hours)

Family & Friends® CPR is for any person who wants to learn CPR but does not require a course completion card. This course is ideal for schools and students, new parents, grandparents, babysitters and others interested in learning how to save a life.

The course covers adult Hands-Only CPR, AED, and choking as well as child/infant CPR and choking.

The course is approximately 3 hours in length and includes skills practice throughout. The course is video-led and is facilitated by an instructor.

Students will be provided with a student manual.

• We can also teach at your site, if you desire and the class is large enough.

••Students must arrive on time and should wear comfortable clothing. Students will be required to perform CPR skills on the floor (some Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (ADA) modification of equipment being placed on table). Students will sign a liability statement prior to beginning class.

•• Students must successfully complete a written exam (as applicable) and all practical skills test.

CPR Class Prices

The instruction we offer is free, as all of our instructors are volunteers. We charge only for the course ware and disposable materials. The costs below are for classes performed at the Sterling Cascades Rescue-Fire Station. An additional fee of $5 per person will be added for classes taught off-site.

• BLS for Healthcare Providers: $50
• Heartsaver® First Aid/CPR/AED: $50
• Heartsaver® CPR/AED: $45
• Family & Friends CPR: $35

Prices include student manual, certification exam (HCP only), and course completion card.

SVRS does not charge a course fee for any member of Loudoun County Fire and Rescue Companies or Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office Operations Division.

*SVRS is a non-profit organization which may make this a tax-deductible expense
