Diet Tips For Healthy Teeth In Children

It’s tough to disassociate good times with sugary sweets. Even the most disciplined eaters are lured in by an ice cream studded with chocolate chips or sprinkles. Childhood is meant to Live it up! But adults have the tough task of playing spoilsport and bring in moderation. But sugar doesn’t need to take all the blame! Regular food too, when left to sit on tooth surfaces can start the decay process.

A lot of children, due to various reasons, take a very long time to eat pouching their food and distractedly forgetting to chew and swallow. This prolonged contact results in formation of certain products, which initiate tooth decay, and eventually the dreaded cavities.

Preventive dentistry is hence an important aspect of child dentistry. Only 17% of the children are taken in for a routine dental check up to a child teeth specialist. Early visits to a specialist prepares you for “what to expect” when it comes to teeth of your newborn. Unknown to many, delayed milk teeth eruption could be due wrong food habits. An unfriendly tooth diet can hamper very many things.

Wrong food items are commonly known to cause cavities, lead to obesity and even type II diabetes. Daily-diet-analysis by a preventive pedodontist, assesses the daily food intake, the nutrient percentage of food consumed and also gives you a sweet-tooth score. Calculating these helps in giving you ways to modify your child’s diet without major changes. A dental friendly diet solves 48% of decay rate, which not only protects your child’s teeth from cavities, but also keeps your child healthier and away from chronic diseases.

Tricks to ace the feeding game:

1. No Screen Rule: Get them into a habit of eating at the table only. No homework, no television, no video games. This could be a time where you could have fun things discussed, E.g. Contents of today’s dessert!

2. Sous Chef: Try getting them to buy the vegetables, adding the salt and even selecting the menu. Children when made a part of the process tend to enjoy meal times more.

3. Mix and Match: This is especially for children below 5. Allow them to try a new fruit/ vegetable every week. Let them develop their own tastes.

4. No means No: If the child refuses to eat. Avoid forcing or fussing over it. Give them another option. The current dish could be presented differently a few days later. They may just prefer it then.

5. Role Play: Children love mimicking adults. The healthier you eat; your child will eat healthier.

6. Sweets are a yes: Don’t ban sweets completely, as it invites cravings and they may overindulge when given a chance.

Try getting a diet session done with your pediatric dentist. We always have ways to help parents ensure healthier smiles for small teeth.
