There has been a very exiting research development at the University of California regarding lithium-ion battery technology. Gold nanowires are used for the transfer and storage of electrons in conventional lithium-ion batteries. These degrade after Appx 1000 cycles. New research by Mya Le Thai has found that coating the wires with manganese dioxide means they will last hundreds of thousands of charge cycles. This means in a few years embedded batteries in cell phones will not have to be changed or the phone discarded.

Should I Keep My Laptop Battery Plugged In All The Time?
This is a very common online question. If you have a modern laptop or notebook with a lithium-ion or lithium-polymer then the battery cannot be overcharged as it has circuitry that disallows this. A greater problem is the battery getting hot. The simple way to avoid this is to make sure that the cooling slots or openings on your laptop or notebook are not blocked. This may sound obvious but the vents often are slots that are not only on the side of the device bout they rap round beneath. So placing the laptop on soft stuff can block up to half the cooling vents. This is particularly significant in high ambient temperatures. Think about the heater on a train or your central heating at home or work or if you place the laptop on your lap.

There are many to store energy including pumping water uphill during non-peak times and then using it to generate energy during peak times. This can also be done with a train full of rocks. At the moment the Germans are building a power storage facility using second hand EV (electric vehicle) batteries to store renewable energy. After their useful life in a car they can still store useful amounts of energy for up to ten years. It also delays the disposal problem.
