I am working on a new video featuring bush medicine practitioner Bertram Forbes. The video is based on short video clips taken in 2008 and 2009. The video compilation will show Mr. Forbes describing 15 bush medicine plants along with brief comments about their uses.  The link will be posted here before the end of October, and will be uploaded to the YouTube bush medicine channel. A new video featuring Erma Pratt has been added to the BahamaBushMedicine video series on YouTube. Though the video is quite short, it is significant in that she is the granddaughter of Sophia Pratt who was twice honored by the Bahamian government for her service as a midwife and her knowledge of bush medicine. While Sophia Pratt was alive she traveled from one end of San Salvador Island to the other, either on foot or horseback, carrying her "birth bundle" of bush medicine plants. She would be gone from home, days at a time while she was assisting women before, during, and after childbirth. The photo in the video is a photograph of her passport photo. The ruins of her house can be seen in the background of the video of Erma Pratt's garden.

Two new videos about Thomas Hanna (parts 1 and 2) have been uploaded to YouTube. Part 3 of the Thomas Hanna series will be uploaded in several days. The next change will be to remove the  3 existing videos of Susilee Anderson in order to consolidate these 3 videos into a longer, more coherent video with added subtitles. During the next several months, additional videos will be uploaded featuring other other practitioners of bush medicine. The material for these videos is derived from videos that were used in our 4-year research project which resulted in the book, "Bush Medicine of the Bahamas."

Part 1 of the Thomas Hanna series may be found here:
Bush Medicine of the Bahamas: Thomas Hanna (part 1)

You may need a trained ear  to understand portions of the Thomas Hanna videos. For that reason some subtitles have been added. It took us 40 hours to transcribe each hour of audio or video for Thomas Hanna. For most other interviewees it required about 14 to 24 hours to transcribe each hour of audio and video. We explored 8 different transcription software programs before settling on one where we could vary the speed, pitch, and bass and treble so that we could accurately transcribe nearly every word.

I gave a presentation on our book, "Bush Medicine of the Bahamas," at the Virginia Festival of the Book on Wednesday, March 20, 2013. This presentation was part of a panel and event called "Flora of the Western Hemisphere," perhaps a somewhat heady title, but the title had to encompass both Virginia and the Bahamas. The other new book was the "Flora of Virginia." presented by Chris Ludwig, chief biologist of the Flora project, and Lara Gastinger, botanical illustrator. A video of the presentation may be seen at http://vimeo.com/63184985
