This is possibly the hippyest thing I've ever posted.
Whether you're happy or sad today, we can celebrate the value of happiness for all. If you suffer depression you're not alone and until you talk about it and seek help you can't know if you'll benefit. If you secretly know you need to change something in your life, think about it and do it — because you've only got one life to live. If you're already happy, then spread it around! #InternationalDayofHappiness

The worldwide Humanist organization of which coincidentally I happen to be a staff member now has a Google+ account! This is an organization which is at the United Nations right now speaking up for human rights, as Humanists. Follow it, circle it, +1 it today!

Good news for the economy: The UK's total failure to investigate or prosecute a single person ever for female genital mutilation is attracting FGM 'tourists', who come to the UK specifically to take advantage of our "tolerant" stance on cultures... Cultures of misogyny and mutilation. I suppose the police only have so much time, don't they. Obviously it's much more important for the police to be scanning in the photos of protesters just in case they do something illegal later, than to be prosecuting FGM abusers that are reported directly to them. Anyway, it's only foreigners, isn't it.

Ok, people don't really know about "witchcraft accusations". They're sort of assumed to be a thing of the past. But there are stories coming in from huge swathes of the world about people, usually women and children, being persecuted, imprisoned, tortured, ostracised, or killed thanks to "witchcraft" accusations. I've been media-monitoring on it for about 2 months now as part of IHEU work and quite seriously there's at least one story every single day. Every single day people being persecuted (often violently) as witches in the 21st century. Here's three stories from yesterday, up on IHEU's page: https://www.facebook.com/iheunion/posts/462855217063781

A bunch of Anglican Lords (who can get married) and even Catholic Cardinals (who don't even want to get married) have decided to tell all gay people that gay people shouldn't be able to get married.

100,000 people have signed their petition, again presumably mostly straight. That's 100,000 people telling hundreds of thousands of other people that they can't share a freedom which they enjoy. Which is shameful.

Since the Coalition for Marriage must be mostly straight people, surely as many straight people as possible should also sign the counter petition, the Coalition for Equal Marriage. If you're a nice straight liberal like me (or even if you're something else, that's cool too) then don't think it's a "gay issue" and ignore it. Go and sign the C4EM counter petition. Defend progressive values against narrow-mindedness supposedly based on awful, weak, fallacious arguments, but actually based on bigotry.
