Today, South Texas Health System presented the Trauma Regional Advisory Committee, a nonprofit organization dedicated to reducing strokes, trauma and heart attack, with more than $5,000 to be used toward stroke education! The funds were from the Run F.A.S.T. 2 Beat Stroke 5K, which took place in May. According to the American Heart Association, stroke is the leading preventable cause of disability, which is why the South Texas Health System and Trauma Regional Advisory Committee are dedicated to educating our community on how to combat stroke.

We hope to see you all at our Trauma and Injury Prevention Expo at McAllen Medical Center, Saturday, September 30th. This year we are excited to have Angel Lamas, MD, as one of our guest speakers where he will discuss dry drowning. Dr. Lamas is a 3rd Year Family Medicine Resident at McAllen Family Medicine Residency Program, where he is also the Chief Resident. In addition to working throughout the United States in a variety of medical and research roles, he has also spent time providing medical care and helping communities in underserved areas of Latin American countries such as Cuba, Honduras and Venezuela. Recently McAllen Medical Center became the first hospital in The Valley to equip neurosurgeons with the latest intra-operative surgical navigation and imaging system. South Texas Health System Neurosurgeons, Jaime Gasco, MD, Syed Hussain, MD, and Alejandro Betancourt, MD, will all utilize this new technology that will allow spinal surgery to be less invasive and provide quicker recovery time for patients. Take a look at Dr. Hussain and Dr. Gasco performing a mock procedure with this new technology.

Big news! Jennifer Garza, CEO of Edinburg Regional Medical Center and Edinburg Children's Hospital, will be one of the dancers for this year’s Dancing with the Stars event, hosted by the Rio Grande Valley Diabetes Association. Jennifer will put on her dancing shoes to raise money for diabetes education in the Valley! From now until October, she will be rehearsing with a professional partner in preparation for the big day.

Most people associate midwives with home births and water births, but did you know midwives are also trained to provide routine gynecological care in a clinic setting? We are proud to have midwives at The Women’s Corner at Edinburg Regional Medical Center to offer patients in the Rio Grande Valley a different birth experience. With the funds raised from the 2017 Healthy Hearts 5K, we were able to provide 15 CPR kits to local schools! CPR training in schools is a top initiative for the American Heart Association. At the start of the academic year, we will be working with multiple districts in Hidalgo County to roll out our CPR training program that could give children a life-saving skill.
