From Amy at Gresham Library:

Hooray! Two more #SummerReading finishers at Gresham Library! To quote their mom, "you know how when you're pregnant everything makes you emotional? Well, I've never really lost that." Trying to be cool, I didn't admit that being a part of that moment, watching a mom get emotional over her daughters finishing the Summer Reading program, caused me to get emotional myself. I'm proud to be a part of such a positive force in our community.

Mr. Johnson is a Holgate Library patron who recently traveled to Great Britain. Mr. Johnson also has autism. "The Holgate library was a wonderful resource for planning my trip,” he said. “I did everything here with the help of staff. Booking the flight, purchasing an Oyster card, getting a BritRail pass, finding hostels and accommodations."

Library staff is adept at helping patrons with disabilities. Mr. Johnson sent us seven postcards from his trip! We loved keeping up with his travels. How can we help you? ‪#‎ADA25‬

Arlene was an avid reader when she was a kid even though she had low vision. As an adult she started to lose the ability to read standard print. E-books to the rescue!

Now Arlene downloads e-books from the library website to her iPad and increases the print size so she can really get hooked on that story again. #ADA25

Denny was never much of a library user because he found reading to be boring and difficult. It turns out he had an undiagnosed reading disability that made it difficult to follow a written story. One day, he discovered books on tape from the library and a new world of stories opened up for him. Eventually he progressed to CDs and MP3s, choosing his next read with care and delight.

We’re celebrating the 25th anniversary of the American with Disabilities Act this month. Do you have a library ADA success story? ‪#‎ADA25‬

From Troutdale Library staff member Sara, who recently went on an outreach visit to promote #SummerReading at a nearby apartment complex: “The kids wanted a storytime, and they all agreed to read a page of their books aloud. I asked who wanted to start, and a little girl raised her hand. When she did not start reading after some time, I was told by someone that the little girl was experiencing some language delays and could not speak. So all the kids decided they would read aloud a book of the little girl's choosing. It touched my heart.”

"I love reading about punk rock scenes," says library blogger Ross, introducing a new book on Portland's punk scene. "There’s hope and excitement in the uninhibited creation of something new. There’s the spirit of rebellion, the drugs, the sex, the drama, and the part at the end where some people rocket to stardom and legend (or at least continue to tour in their 60s) and others die or fade away. And, of course, there’s also the music, which was powerful, raw, intense, and changed our lives. And our hair."
