Violence against nurses, doctors and other health pros
BY PAMELA FAYERMAN Most people with mental health issues are not violent. But as my recent stories about a psychiatrist who was severely beaten by his patient at a Penticton hospital shows, some patients are dangerously aggressive. In a nanosecond, they may turn "treaters" into assault victims. Indeed, rates of violence against mental health professionals…

Assaults on health professionals just keep going up and up
WorkSafeBC accepted 879 claims from workers in the health and social services sectors who were injured on the job last year after physical assaults by patients, clients and others. Disturbingly, the number of workers who have been injured and off work because of violence has been steadily rising for many years.

Should government put the brakes on direct-to-consumer advertising of prescription meds?
Health Canada is indifferent to enforcing its own regulations when it comes to prescription drug ads targeted to health consumers, according to a pair of academics who’ve published a first-of-its-kind, 10-year study which they say proves that. “The feds have essentially washed their hands of pretty much all direct involvement with direct-to-consumer advertising (DTCA),” said Dr. Joel Lexchin, a York University professor and emergency room physici...

More influence and pay for doctors
The deal means the province will be spending about $4.4 billion a year on doctors by the fifth year of the deal, or about $400 million more than today.

My first blog post just over six years ago. Since then, well over a million readers!
Welcome to my blog about B.C. health care. The B.C. medical system is a $20 billion a year enterprise if you include what the government budgets and what each health consumer spends in out of pocket expenses. Daily stories don't give readers much insight into the perspectives of the medical mavericks and leaders who play…

Bling!
Story and Photos By Pamela Fayerman Overlooking Lake Okanagan, on Mount Royce, I discovered the Rolls Royce of spas. It was pure nirvana, not to mention a place with plenty of serious bling in the form of Austrian crystal. Coincidentally, the rapturous retreat is not far from the lakeside summer camp I went to as a kid. My…

A psychiatrist was beaten by a patient, then the patient played pool.
Moments after a psychiatrist was severely beaten in a Penticton Regional Hospital interview room, the 30-year-old patient accused of the crime casually walked to the psych unit pool table and picked up a cue.

Do you get an annual physical? Should you?
BY PAMELA FAYERMAN More than 50 per cent of Albertans get an annual physical (the highest rate in the country) but just over a third of B.C. residents go to their doctors for the annual ritual which involves a head-to-toe physical examination. That's the lowest proportion in the country, according to an Ipsos Reid poll. The 37 per…
