This is going to be a long text, so please don't read unless you have some time. I will also be getting this on my blog site (spikybear.com/blog
Yesterday I went to BestBuy to try and take advantage of their free promotion on the Google Nexus S. Unfortunately they were sold out of the units, and that is where the disaster started.
The sales person first stated that they could place the device on hold for me, for the nice and even sum of $50.
I am quite certain he said that I would get that money retuned to me when I received the device, however he was unable to give me an estimate as to when the device could be delivered. So in effect I would be giving $50 to BestBuy to hold on to for an undisclosed amount of time. (not much money, but for them that can add up across their user base so that they may get some steady interest income or operating flexibility on the funds).
In this case I went against my better judgement and said I would go ahead and give the deposit. BestBuy sales guy then proceeds to take out the paperwork to add my line to my Wife's thus creating a FamilyPlan on AT&T. Sounds good, until he mentions that they will be activating the account today.
I then spend the next 5 minutes asking the same question worded in different ways trying to get a coherent answer. Question was will I be billed for this account starting today.
He kept going on about how they won't activate the Nexus phone until it arrives, but they will be giving me the AT&T SIM today. (I am in shock as you don't activate a GSM phone, as the SIM holds all of that information)
Finally I was able to get the correct answer, AT&T billing would start that day, and had to decline on the offer. Not only would BestBuy be holding onto my $50 for an unknown amount of time, I also would begin to get charged for an AT&T line which I wouldn't be using for an unknown amount of time.
Sorry AT&T / BestBuy / Samsung, you will have to wait for my money until you get your act together.
