Voters were denied the right to ask Donald Trump questions that millions of Americans care about at the town hall debate. They could have been fairly asked of both candidates, and yet would have exposed Trump for the unqualified, ignorant, racist, sexist, misogynistic, sexual assaulting, sociopathically lying, shamelessly scapegoating, unfit to be President fraud that he is.

Why The Chapel Hill Shooting Was More Hate Crime Than 'Parking Dispute' --Triple murder suspect Craig Hicks reportedly tangled with numerous residents of his Chapel Hill, N.C. apartment complex over parking issues, but his shooting rampage began and ended only with his Muslim neighbors.  Why were they the only ones he singled out for repeated, gun-toting harassment?

Last week's execution-style murders of three Muslim students came at a time of rising anti-Muslim tensions in North Carolina and nationwide, on a day marked by a nonstop media drumbeat about the confirmed death of U.S. hostage Kayla Mueller, who was being held captive by ISIS militants.

This crime has struck a powerful chord in the hearts of Muslim-Americans, Muslims abroad, and everyone else who cares about Islamophobia.  The corporate media's willingness to frame these killings as resulting from nothing more than a 'parking dispute' reveals a double standard when it comes to reporting about Muslims as victims of violence.   Many suspect the three students' shooting was hate-related.

Why Didn't Banksters Go To Jail For Causing The Financial Crisis?  During the S&L crisis of the late 1980s and early 90s, more than 1,100 individuals were prosecuted, including many of the largest failed banks' high-ranking executives.  Following the 2008 financial crisis, exactly one top executive went to jail for his part in helping cause the Great Recession.

How did the banksters get away with it?  The answer is that for all the good Attorney General Eric Holder has done - from dialing back our nation's misguided war on drugs, to vigorously defending voting rights in the face of the GOP's blatant attempts to disenfranchise black voters - when it came to prosecuting white collar financial crime, he dropped the ball.

In this two-part special, +Democracy Now! explains why, featuring conversations with Rolling Stone reporter +Matt Taibbi and Alayne Fleischmann, the whistleblower whose testimony JPMorgan Chase was so afraid of they paid a $9 billion settlement rather than go to trial over its financial misdeeds.  Fleischmann witnessed "massive criminal securities fraud" while employed by the firm, as other employees deceived investors about the quality of a huge number of residential mortgage-backed securities JPMorgan Chase was issuing before the crash in 2008.

Taibbi reveals how the corporate law firm Eric Holder worked for before becoming Attorney General represented virtually all of the nation's biggest financial companies, and how Holder is typical of a new breed of federal prosecutor.  According to Taibbi:

"There are really two types of people that I talk to who are prosecutors. One is the kind of old-school law enforcement type that want to get the bad guy at all costs, and they’re really career civil servants who just want to do their jobs and want to see justice happen. And then there’s this new kind of person who’s appearing in government now, who comes out of the corporate defense sector. These are people who grew up as corporate lawyers defending companies like Chase and Bank of America.

And that’s who Eric Holder is, very pointedly. He spent a long time at a company called Covington & Burling. And this type of lawyer, this type of law enforcement official, is much more interested in coming up with a settlement that everybody feels good about when they walk out of the room, as opposed to the old-school kind of justice where the bad guy gets his or her comeuppance in the end. And I think his tenure was very representative of a big sea change in the way we do white-collar crime in this country."

The Forgotten Story of How Police Killed Football Player Angelo Robinson - This is what happened to a twenty-two year-old black football player named Angelo Robinson on July 11, 1993 - the night he died in police custody in Concord, N.C.  Robinson, who had asthma, was pepper-sprayed, dumped in a police van, and left to choke on his own vomit enroute to the police station while the officers transporting him did nothing.  His death precipitated five nights of rioting by the local black community, an episode of resistance to police brutality that pre-dated Ferguson, Mo. by twenty years.

Use Uber At Your Own Risk - $800 For a 20-Mile Ride?!  The ride-sharing service Uber received an escalating torrent of bad press in 2014 amid mounting legal challenges to its business model around the world.  Uber CEO Travis Kalanick was even awarded a spot on a list called America's Ten Greediest: The 2014 Edition, produced by Too Much, a project of the Institute for Policy Studies.

Why are so many people upset about Uber?  Consumers using the service have voiced complaints about being overcharged by astronomical amounts, revelations that the Uber app which millions have uploaded onto their phones is "literally malware," and "one of the most recurring complaints about the pseudo-taxi company: its lack of customer service" when problems arise.

"In the past few weeks, cities as far-flung as Portland, Oregon and Rio de Janeiro have moved to ban the company from operating within city limits. The rape of an Uber passenger in New Delhi threatens its existence there. Its drivers have been revealed to be less vetted than originally promised—and that’s when the drivers themselves aren’t striking to make the money they were originally promised.

The (Uber) app is no better, having been exposed as all but malware, with data mining functions so intrusive they’ve gotten the attention of Senator Al Franken.

But nothing plagues Uber like its pricing scheme. Arguably the heart of the company’s strategy, dynamic or “surge” pricing inflates and constricts the cost of a trip according to demand.

From drivers taking passed-out passengers on joyrides to run up the bill, or dropping several hundred dollar tabs on intoxicated people who just needed to get home, here are the most jaw-dropping Uber rides to date," including an $814 fare for a 21-mile trip in Los Angeles:

First Gray Wolf in Grand Canyon Since 1940s Feared Shot Dead - A Utah hunter shot and killed a wolf equipped with a radio collar last weekend who may have been "Echo," the first gray wolf seen in the Grand Canyon in the past 70 years.  Echo made headlines last fall when she was spotted near the northern rim of the Grand Canyon after a 500-mile trek through several Western states.

As reported by Nature World News:

"Conservationists rejoiced back in October when a gray wolf was spotted at the Grand Canyon in Arizona, a hopeful sign that this endangered species was on its way to recovery. But now saddening reports indicate that this lone wolf may have been shot dead Sunday, ending its famous 500-mile (800-kilometer) journey across the West."

According to Reuters:

"Echo was the first gray wolf seen in the Grand Canyon since the 1940s, when the last wolf there was killed as part of an extensive eradication campaign, said Chris Cline with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.  The gray wolf is protected under the U.S. Endangered Species Act in most states.

Utah regulations require hunters to properly identify their target before shooting but cases of mistaken identity sometimes happen, Utah Division of Wildlife Resources spokesman Mark Martinez said.  'It's something we train people for in hunter education classes but it's not a unique thing,' he said.

Wildlife advocates said the death was shameful, whether or not the wolf was Echo.  'It's very sad either way,' said Michael Robinson, conservation advocate with the Center for Biological Diversity."

GOP Leader Steve Scalise Knew What Racist Company He Was Keeping - Republican House Majority Whip Steve Scalise (R-La.)'s claims that he unwittingly appeared at a white supremacy conference in 2002 ring hollow, according to conference organizer David Duke.  The former KKK Grand Wizard and onetime GOP presidential candidate says Scalise knew exactly what company he was keeping.

"Scalise would communicate a lot with my campaign manager, Kenny Knight," Duke said on Monday when interviewed by the Washington Post. "That is why he was invited and why he would come."  Kenny Knight is one of Scalise's campaign donors.

The current media spotlight on Scalise is uncovering more and more instances where the Republican leader has exploited bigotry to further his political career, from voting against an MLK holiday twice to fighting to stop a bill designed to "prohibit hate crimes based on race, class or sexual orientation."

As reported by Vocativ:

"Scalise is also a regular on Tony Perkins' radio show, Washington Watch With Tony Perkins. Perkins heads the Family Research Council, which the Southern Poverty Law Center condemns as virulently anti-LGBT.

Perkins, also from Louisiana, has connections to Duke as well. In the mid-’90s, while acting as a campaign manager for Woody Jenkins, then a candidate for the U.S. Senate, he paid $82,500 for Duke’s mailing list. Like Scalise, he improbably claimed he didn’t know the list was attached to Duke, but happened to file a false campaign disclosure form to hide the payment, and was subsequently fined $3,000. Three years later, while serving as a state representative, he gave a speech to the Council of Conservative Citizens, another white supremacist group."

Ghosts of Racism Past and Present Still Haunt the GOP - Speaking at a white supremacy conference organized by former KKK Grand Wizard David Duke in 2002 was not the first time incoming Republican House Majority Whip Steve Scalise (R-La.) has tried to further his political career by appealing to bigotry and dividing people.  Past votes and legislation pushed by Scalise show a disturbing pattern that casts doubts on his commitment to equal rights for all Americans.

While serving as a state representative, Scalise joined former U.S. Senator and notorious bigot Jesse Helms (R-N.C.) in the dubious club of Republicans who tried to stop the nation from honoring Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday, when he twice voted against establishing an MLK holiday in Louisiana.

In 1997, he voted no on a bill designed to "prohibit hate crimes based on race, class or sexual orientation." Exploiting anti-gay bigotry to win votes for the GOP in 2004, Scalise was the lead author of a bill that put a constitutional amendment on the Louisiana ballot banning gay marriage.

The Republican Party needs to decide whether this is the face it wants to keep showing at a time when it has a demographic imperative to improve its standing with non-white voters.  As Steve Scalise's political career makes clear, the ghosts of racism past and present still haunt the GOP.

How the GOP and NYPD are Plotting To Crush the BlackLivesMatter Movement - Secret e-mails and racist chat messages reveal how right-wing GOP operatives tied to Rudy Giuliani and NYPD union head Patrick Lynch are planning to undermine support for liberal New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio and the growing BlackLivesMatter Movement seeking equal justice for all.

As reported by Alternet:

"When hundreds of cops from around the country and as far away as Canada turned their backs on New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio during the funeral of Officer Rafael Ramos, the NYPD officer shot to death alongside his partner Wenjian Liu by a deranged gunman, they fired the first salvo in a carefully coordinated political operation aimed at discrediting the liberal mayor and shattering the ongoing anti-police brutality protest movement.

AlterNet has obtained emails revealing plans to organize a series of anti-de Blasio protests around the city until the summer of 2015. Billed as a non-partisan movement in support of 'the men and women of the NYPD,' the protests are being orchestrated by a cast of NYPD union bosses and local Republican activists allied with Rudy Giuliani, the former mayor who recently called on de Blasio to 'say you’re sorry to [NYPD officers] for having created a false impression of them.' The first rally is planned to take place at Queens Borough Hall at noon on January 13.

Joe Concannon, a failed Republican State Senate candidate and current president of the Tea Party-aligned Queens Village Republican Club, is the main organizer of the burgeoning anti-de Blasio protest effort. The retired NYPD captain and former Giuliani advisor is a close ally of Patrolmen’s Benevolent Association president Patrick Lynch. Lynch generated national headlines — and cheers from rank and file cops — when he claimed that de Blasio 'has blood on [his] hands' just hours after Ismaaiyl Brinsley murdered Rafael Ramos and Wenjian Liu."
