Famed Lions Poisoned in Kenya Wildlife Reserve

At least two lions are dead after eating a poisoned cow carcass left for them.

First, it was Cecil the lion. Now, there’s news that more famous lions have been killed—this time with poison rather than a gun.

The victims come from the Marsh Pride, a family of lions living in the Masai Mara National Reserve in southwest Kenya. They were the stars of the long-running and hugely popular BBC series called Big Cat Diary. They even have their own Facebook page, where the poisoning was confirmed. On Saturday night, they ate a cow carcass laced with poison.

Bibi, one of the pride’s female lions, and at least one other lion, have died.... http://news.nationalgeographic.com/2015/12/151207-lions-marsh-pride-kenya-masai-mara-reserve-big-cat-diary/

Shopping centres hoping to attract customers by using live animals are misguided and out of touch

Father Christmas ho-ho-ho-ing, a sleigh, lots of coloured lights, festive music – what could be more atmospheric as you begin your Christmas shopping?

Of course, reindeer fully understand what Christmas is, and how humans celebrate it, and are only too happy to be carted round to shopping centres every December. They probably had the dates marked on their own calendars in advance.

No doubt they adore standing for hours on end confined in pens, under glaringly bright and possibly hot spotlights, confused also by a melee of moving coloured lights.... http://www.captiveanimals.org/news/2015/12/blog-rudolph-the-reindeer-wont-want-to-see-you-this-christmas

Costa Rica’s iconic treasures of the sea are in danger. Sea turtles and their eggs have been victims of poachers continuously over the years. Not only has poachers been an issue, but conservationists have also become targets. On May 30th 2013, a 26-year-old conservationist named Jairo Mora Sandoval was kidnapped and murdered by sea turtle poachers. However, after demonstrations and supportive publicity for the justice of the innocent man, charge...

Kazakhstan: Saiga's Fortunes Further Dashed by Poachers

As if Kazakhstan’s beleaguered saiga antelope population doesn’t have enough to cope with already, hunters are still trying to kill them for their horns.

A moratorium on hunting the animal is in place until 2021, but that has not deterred the most determined poachers.

Officials say that they have registered 21 saiga poaching cases this year in the southern Kyzylorda region alone, according to the state-run 24.kz television station.

Overall, 309 cases of illegal hunting were recorded in the region this year.... http://www.eurasianet.org/node/76446

France, STOP the Senseless Shooting of Wolves!
Killing wolves must be the last step to protect herd. But today, in France, any prefect can take this decision and the situation became totally anarchic ! We ask to the ministry, to repealed the law that legalize these senseless derogation which do not respect any more the Bern Act, and so, to become back the only decision maker, in dialogue with environmental association, to legalize the killing of wolves if any others protections solutions does...

Rhino horn trade still restricted to SA borders

Rhino breeders should have waited for government to announce its stance on the legalisation of trade in rhino horn before the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora - CITES- 17th Conference of Parties to be held in South Africa next year.

Research Director at North West University, Professor Melville Saayman, says the victory enjoyed by breeders when the Pretoria High Court ruled that the six year trade ban be lifted, only allows for trade in South Africa.

While the Department Of Environmental Affairs is pushing to appeal the court decision, the country continues to battle record breaking poaching figures, including a staggering 1 215 rhino killed last year.... http://www.sabc.co.za/news/a/af8bb2804ad132aa80b1962f1282c98c/Rhino-horn-trade-still-restricted-to-SA-borders--20151204
