Do cops have to know the law? Not always, says court
Check out this article about a recent ruling from the U.S. Supreme Court pertaining to a North Carolina drug case. The court ruled that an officer's “reasonable” ignorance of the law is permissible, even if such ignorance leads to the arrest and conviction of a person on a more serious charge. Many critics have condemned the court ruling, noting that ignorance of the law is not a valid defense for citizens and nor should it be for police.
