I will be going this year for my third time and definitely think there needs to be a user's guide for newbies... I may even write it! You don't need to have a badge to have a great time at SXSW, but you need one in order to get a close hotel if you're not from the area, and you need to get one basically the day registration opens. Google every SXSW list on the internet, Twitter and Facebook, to find out about non-official SXSW events that are probably most definitely worth going to. Come with an empty suitcase because it will be full with free swag by the time you leave.

sxsw interactive is great - as long as you do everything right the first time. i'm disappointed that there isn't a way to downgrade a badge if one say ... accidentally purchases the platinum badge instead of interactive in a moment of haste. i've never been to a conference that's unaccommodating in this manner. and i understand that technically, it's totally my fault that i've got a $450 more expensive badge than i meant to. but i also understand that i've been supporting sxsw since the beginning. and it just doesn't feel like the friendly conference that it used to.

SXSWi is an event where you'll connect with people that can tell you things that you didn't know about the interactive digital media industry...

This is awesome!! I will come prepared next time it's so hot! But all the stands are so interesting and they are so passionate about what they are selling. All in all it's so amazing

SXSW is probably one of the most overwhelming festivals that I have been to. It completely takes over downtown for 10 days but is the most exciting ten days of the year. There is so much going on, so many people around, and so many great shows and movies to see. The staff are awesome and they have a great reward system for volunteers.

One of the best times of the year in Austin. More music than you can possibly take in and people everywhere. A lot of Austinites get frustrated with the amount of people but if you give into it and go take in some free music, parties, and beer all will be forgiven. Hotels go insanely fast so book early or find alternate places.
