triglycerides and the ways to fight them down.

Triglycerides are a type of lipids, or fats, that are found in the bloodstream.

When you eat, your body converts the calories that you did not use — to triglycerides and they are stocked inside the fatty cells and circulates in the blood. When your body needs energy, it brings into play some hormones that will free those triglycerides that are stocked.
If you eat more than you burn, day after day, specially “easy calories” like carbohydrates and fats and have the genetics for that, you will have high triglyceride, or hypertriglyceridimia

The normal levels for tryglicerides are until 150 milligrams per deciliter.

There are some differences between tryglicerides and cholesterol. The triglycerides come, like I already said, from calories that were not BURNED, and the cholesterol is mainly from genetics and liver production- 70-80% and from diets that are rich in saturated fats, trans fat, cholesterol and also calories in excess.

The question is: why triglycerides matter?

Although it is not so well documented like in the high cholesterol, high levels of tryglicerides can make your arteries stiff and can accelerate atherosclerosis, that raises the risk for strokes, heart attacks and cardiovascular diseases.
Extremely high levels of triglycerides, above 400/ 500 mg/dl, can case accuTe pancreatitis, that may be fatal.

Besides that, high levels of tryglicerides can give us clues to other pathologies, like metabolic syndrome, pre- diabitis or diabetes, hypotirodism, and diseases from the kidney and liver.

So, how CAN YOU lower you tryglicerides?
First, you have to change your lifestyle.
My tip number one is: lose weight. 10-20 pounds can make a huge impact in your triglyceride levels.
Tip number 2- reduce your calories ingestion, since the excess of calories will be converted in trYGLICERIDES

Tip number 3- chose healthy fats- reducing saturated fats that comes from dairy and meats, avoiding completely trans fats and choosing heathy oils like olive oil. And also eat nuts, avocados, and foods that are high in omega 3, like fish, flaxseed and my favorite to lower triglyceride, the chia seeds.
Tip number 4- limit the alcohol intake, because it is high in calories and has a potent effect raising the triglycerides. When you have the genes, small amounts can bring your triglycerides up.
And tip number 5- exercise. Have a goal to do daily exercises and to get up more often from the chair. Exercises are essencial for a healthy life. Try to do more than 30 minutes straight. Besides, burning your triglicérides you will raise your HDL cholesterol, the good cholesterol.
