This decline has not of course gone unnoticed by the elite. There's a reason for the increasing militarization of police and security organizations in the United States and the UK: widespread civil disorder escalating to revolution along the lines of the Arab Spring is no longer unimaginable by 2030 if current trends continue. The oligarchs can hold the lid down by force for quite a considerable time, but the longer this continues the worse the eventual explosion will be, as witness the upheavals in Egypt or Ukraine.

OS X 10.9.2 time keeping gets stuck and then drifts horribly out of sync:

$ ntpdate -q blinky
…offset 81.353467 sec

Opening the Date & Time preference panel causes it to wake up and sync again:

$ ntpdate -q blinky
…offset 0.000163 sec

Impressive work, Apple.

Apple really needs to allow Snow Leopard desktop for VMs.

BT makes Deutsche Telekom look good in comparison.
A different type of stolen copper this time - engineers "borrowing" pairs when installing a new line! Whilst there is a real problem with large scale theft of cables which is a big issue for companies like BT and their custom...

This bird would probably just make some cash on the stock market and then hire a contract killer instead of pecking people ;-)

Excellent rant about browsers, CSS, Javascript and all that [PDF]

Such an initial semicolon is called a “defensive semicolon.” That is the saddest programming concept that I’ve ever heard, and I am fluent in C++.
I could go on and on about the reasons why JavaScript is a cancer upon the world. I know that there are people who like JavaScript, and I hope that these people find the mental health services that they so desperately need. I don’t know all of the answers in life, but I do know all of the things which aren’t the answers, and JavaScript falls into the same category as Scientology, homeopathic medicine, and making dogs wear tiny sweaters due to a misplaced belief that this is what dogs would do if they had access to looms and opposable thumbs.

You have to open your eyes and see that in the real, non-hyperbolic world that you actually inhabit, your browser will frequently stop playing a video and then display flashing epilepsy pixels while making the sound that TVs make in Japanese horror movies before a pasty salamander child steps out of the screen and voids your warranty.

I have Douglas Crockford's "JavaScript: The Good Parts" book. It's pretty thin. :)

Space bugs!

Tardigrades can withstand temperatures from just above absolute zero to well above the boiling point of water, pressures about six times stronger than pressures found in the deepest ocean trenches, ionizing radiation at doses hundreds of times higher than the lethal dose for a human, and the vacuum of outer space. They can go without food or water for more than 10 years, drying out to the point where they are 3% or less water, only to rehydrate, forage, and reproduce.

Factorio is a game for Minecraft graduates. Instead of mining yourself, you build automated mining drills, conveyor belts, steam engines, factories and even a rail network (modeled after Transport Tycoon).

Despite only being in alpha, I've been having a ton of fun with this, so try the demo.

I love this no-bullshit SIP client. It has one window (per SIP account) with a single field, where you can enter a phone number or search your address book. When you hit enter, it dials. Exactly as much as a SIP client needs, no more. And it is called Telephone.
