I've had more days like this this year than I can count. Love pow! (Granted the sun was rarely shining.)

"eating a diet rich in animal proteins during middle age makes you four times more likely to die of cancer than someone with a low-protein diet — a mortality risk factor comparable to smoking."

Absolutely right, increasingly work is about creativity and that rarely happens at work. (Thanks to @Cheryl Howard for the find.)

"If we want to do more than just go through the motions, both love and work require a protected space in which creativity can flourish."

Totally agree! The Boomers aren't so smart, and certainly don't have the answers for where we're headed. Give me Millennials any day!

"How many fifty-plus working people got the rug pulled out from under them over the past fifteen years, after devoting decades and countless brain and heart cells to someone else’s vision and someone else’s bottom line? Millennials have the right idea."

It amazes me that academia (outreach) is so late to this conversation. We should be right in the middle of it.

"DIYbio looks like boys with toys … does this signal a shift where expertise begins to be fostered in different types of spaces."

Yep, it's the same dynamic you see with newspapers, the music industry, et al. We see where denial has gotten them.

Great read about the need/value for cognitive diversity in problem solving. When everyone is cut from the same cloth it is nearly impossible to get breakthrough thinking.

"the probability of solving tough scientific challenges is three times higher if a person’s field of expertise is seven degrees outside the domain of the problem."

Cool project.

"More than 80% of the projects have been successful in helping farmers reinvigorate their farms. These farmers are at the forefront of agricultural innovation in production, marketing, and cooperative enterprises. Their hard work deserves to be documented both online and in a book.”

Interesting read. It's #2 which changes everything. #1 and #3 aren't really options.

”This is the strange circumstance that obtained in 2013, given the volume of the stream. Regular Internet users only had three options: 1) be overwhelmed 2) hire a computer to deploy its logic to help sort things 3) get out of the water.”

The answer to your obscurity problems.

The old way:

"In the old days, it was simple and straightforward.  We built influence by having answers. The focus at that point was to master ways of communicating those answers so that we were able to persuade others that our answers were better than anyone else’s."
