Today is a special day for any cocktail geek: World Cocktail Day. On this day in 1806, The Balance and Columbian Repository, an upstate New York newspaper, published the first known definition of the word "cock-tail", in response to a reader's query on an article.

We are marking today with an Old-Fashioned, a style of cocktail that most closely matches The Balance's famous description of it as "a stimulating liquor, composed of spirits of any kind, sugar, water and bitters." Enjoy.

We've explored the veracity of ten of the interwebz' favourite drinking quotes and found - quelle surprise - that something is (almost always) wrong on the internet.

What makes something bitter? And why is the cocktail world so recently obsessed with this strong taste, have we finally graduated out of childhood?

"Overall the venue is fun, welcoming and has a great selection of booze and cocktails. Add in customers wearing bibs to eat and it's a blast."

On this day in 1994, an electrician discovered the body of one of the decade's biggest stars, Kurt Cobain, at his home in Seattle. He had joined the 27 Club three days before, after running out on rehab for a longstanding heroin addiction.

With Nirvana, Cobain had headlined the grunge movement and gone from an obscure indie artist to a stadium-filling rock star - which hadn't resolved his issues with depression, or addiction.
Despite the fact that he'd left a note before sticking a shotgun in his mouth, some internet conspiracists continue to insist that he was wiped out by a hitman hired by his then-wife, Courtney Love, or parties unknown.

Twenty years on, Cobain's music continues to move, and his face is still iconic - there's currently talk of a musical and a Nirvana reunion tour. We're toasting a great but tormented artist with one of our own creations, a Rock 'n' Rye.

"Whenever my mother drank alcohol she would flush a bright, almost nuclear red. Her head would pound and she'd slur her words after literally one drink. Add in that she is from Hong Kong and you can practically see the knowing looks on people's faces: it's the 'Asian gene', they're thinking."

The Asian 'alcohol' gene explained.

"Use the force, Luke!" One of the best-known British actors of the twentiethcentury, and a unique talent, Alec Guinness was born 100 years ago today. And is almost certainly spinning in his grave even now at the thought that the role he is best-known for is Obi-Wan Kenobi in the original Star Wars. But there was more to him than that.

He won an Oscar for his role in The Bridge on the River Kwai - and was nominated for a screenwriting Oscar, as well. He appeared in Lawrence of Arabia, Doctor Zhivago and A Passage to India - and taught an 8-year-old Emma Thompson the facts of life.

A complex man, scarred by a difficult childhood, Guinness wasn't a flawless human. But his acting was, and is, amazing - and so we're toasting him with a Stout Fellow, created by Matthew Coates using the chocolate nectar that bears his name.

On this day in 1984, the soul singer Marvin Gaye got in a physical fight with his bullying, pastor father, Marvin Gay (Sr.). It only ended when his father shot him dead, then shot him a second time at point blank range - although he later told cops "I didn't mean to do it".

The man who brought us Sexual Healing, What's Going On and Got to Give It Up - and apparently "inspired" Robin Thicke so much that his children are in litigation over two separate tracks - had suffered from depression and coke-induced paranoia, and tried to kill himself at least three times. Some believe, including the family, that his attack on his father was an attempt at suicide by murder.

Gaye died the day before he would have turned 45. In honour of a man who transformed the sound of Motown, inspired covers by everyone from Diana Ross and Aretha Franklin to Aaliyah and the Strokes, and shaped not only soul but R&B, we're drinking a Cuban Heal, created by Matthew Keegan, and full of natural, if not sexual, healing.
