The 2014 Arkansas State Fair food report is out! Looks like there are some interesting things to try this year. I know I'm looking forward to the grilled quail!

Today is also the last day to purchase advance admission to the Fair. Adults are $6 (save $4). Buy it at Walgreens.

Monday, Oct 13th is dollar day (entry, rides, & parking). Tuesday, Oct 14th is military appreciation day (free entry). Wednesday, Oct 15th is Ladies Night (free entry). As always lunch is free entry 11am - 1pm Monday - Friday.

Parking is $5.

The musical acts this year are nothing to write home about. Travis Tritt is tomorrow (Saturday) at 8pm and REO Speedwagon on Friday, Oct 17th at 8pm. There is a band I am unfamiliar with called Pop Evil and they're playing Saturday, Oct 18th at 8pm.

Didn't realize we had a famous game programmer on faculty here at #UALR . Prof. Dona Bailey of the Department for Rhetoric and Writing worked for Atari and developed the classic 1980s video arcade game, Centipede. #STEMgirls

I've been doing some research on Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also commonly known as Lou Gehrig's Disease as I was challenged yesterday to the #icebucketchallenge .  I was originally in the "slactivist" camp as this appeared to be glorified selfie videos that weren't doing anything for the actual cause.

However, after doing some reading it turns out that, "As of Monday, August 25, The ALS Association has received $79.7 million in donations compared to $2.5 million during the same time period last year (July 29 to August 25). These donations have come from existing donors and 1.7 million new donors to The Association." -

So apparently this new form of social media marketing and peer-to-peer challenge actually makes a real difference to one of the largest not-for-profit organizations that is leading the charge against this debilitating neural affliction. Great article here from +CNN  in support of this form of fundraising:

There has also been an outcry against the ALS because part of their involvement with embryonic stem cell research. Just to be clear, people aren't intentionally killing babies to provide the fodder for stem cell research. ALL the embryos used come from in vitro fertilization (IVF), most frequently by couples that are having trouble conceiving. "In in vitro fertilization, researchers mix a man's sperm and a woman's eggs together in a lab dish...Each cycle of IVF can produce many [viable embryos], some of which are implanted into the woman and the rest are stored in the IVF clinic freezer. After a couple has completed their family, they must decide what to do with any remaining embryos. They can continue paying to store the embryos or they can defrost the embryos, which destroys them. Some couples may choose to donate the embryos for adoption, though that option is not commonly taken. In some states, couples can also choose to donate the frozen embryos for research. These donated embryos are the source of human embryonic stem cell lines." - more info available here:

The ALS has a brief post that describes what stem cells are and why they are vital to the research being conducted here:

And lastly, here are some common myths/misconceptions about the causes and symptoms of Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS):

Great new business to support during their research and development: Undercover Colors. Four college students are currently developing nail polish that is used to discreetly check for several date rape drugs in a drink. The Drinksafe coasters work, but sometimes take a bit longer than one would want to wait before results are clear. Plus there are reports of citric acid and lactic acid affecting the results (drink mixers). They are hoping to address those problems in the creation of a new nail polish line.

Not that I ever got a chance to play Zelda growing up due to a lack of gaming console, but I can still appreciate the humor in today's +TeeFury "Save the Chickens." I like the idea of Zelda being as tricky as Lucy. +Cassandra Strawn

Political Quiz that allows one to see how their own personal ideals fall on the scale. What's even better is the voter guide that it creates based on your location so can compare your results with the candidates which will show up on your local ballot this November 4, 2014. Highly recommended to all U.S. Citizens!
