The 2014 Arkansas State Fair food report is out! Looks like there are some interesting things to try this year. I know I'm looking forward to the grilled quail!

Today is also the last day to purchase advance admission to the Fair. Adults are $6 (save $4). Buy it at Walgreens.

Monday, Oct 13th is dollar day (entry, rides, & parking). Tuesday, Oct 14th is military appreciation day (free entry). Wednesday, Oct 15th is Ladies Night (free entry). As always lunch is free entry 11am - 1pm Monday - Friday.

Parking is $5.

The musical acts this year are nothing to write home about. Travis Tritt is tomorrow (Saturday) at 8pm and REO Speedwagon on Friday, Oct 17th at 8pm. There is a band I am unfamiliar with called Pop Evil and they're playing Saturday, Oct 18th at 8pm.

pretty good; like a blander chicken. A lot more moist than I would have thought for being a small bird. +Jay Wright said it tasted like dove - flavorless.

Didn't realize we had a famous game programmer on faculty here at #UALR . Prof. Dona Bailey of the Department for Rhetoric and Writing worked for Atari and developed the classic 1980s video arcade game, Centipede. #STEMgirls

Great new business to support during their research and development: Undercover Colors. Four college students are currently developing nail polish that is used to discreetly check for several date rape drugs in a drink. The Drinksafe coasters work, but sometimes take a bit longer than one would want to wait before results are clear. Plus there are reports of citric acid and lactic acid affecting the results (drink mixers). They are hoping to address those problems in the creation of a new nail polish line.

Four undergraduate students at North Carolina State University are attempting to produce a nail polish that will reveal the presence of “date rape drugs” such as Rohypnol and GHB by changing color in their presence. “With our nail polish, any woman will be empowered to discreetly ensure her safety by simply stirring her drink with her finger,” the Undercover Colors Facebook page says.

+Timothy Lee An interesting article about Coursera's MOOCs at work.
Without technological support and with a lack of financing, an experiment in online courses at an African refugee camp fell short.

Great Gmail Tips & Tricks, lovingly stolen from +Brandon McLeod .
One trick you may or may not have picked up about Gmail is that you can add in periods anywhere in the front part of your address and it makes no difference whatsoever: john.smith@gmail.com works just the same as johnsmith@gmail.com. What's more, you can add a plus sign and any word before the @ sign (e.g. johnsmith+hello@gmail.com) and messages will still reach you. If these tweaks make no difference, then why use them? One major reason: filters...

He did it again! "Tacky" is just as catchy as the song it is a parody of, "Happy," but the lyrics are killer. Even a shout out to the Comic Sans lovers.

Click the link to watch the video on Nerdist News. Doesn't appear to be up on Youtube yet, neither Al's nor +Nerdist  channels.

We are teeming with excitement to announce that Nerdist is premiering “Weird Al” Yankovic’s first music video for his #8videos8days project. Feast your eyes on the video for “Tacky,” a wonderfully warped and wacky version of Pharrell’s hyper-bubbly mega-hit, “Happy.” Featuring guest…

That was great! I hadn't heard the song this parodies until April when they decided to play it EVERY morning of the benchmark testing. That was nearly two weeks of "Happy". Every teacher was ready to destroy the speaker system by the end of it.

Don't forget to vote today! One has no right to complain if they don't at least try to make a difference. It is our duty as citizens.

Remember: vote against amendment #3!

I've been doing some research on Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also commonly known as Lou Gehrig's Disease as I was challenged yesterday to the #icebucketchallenge .  I was originally in the "slactivist" camp as this appeared to be glorified selfie videos that weren't doing anything for the actual cause.

However, after doing some reading it turns out that, "As of Monday, August 25, The ALS Association has received $79.7 million in donations compared to $2.5 million during the same time period last year (July 29 to August 25). These donations have come from existing donors and 1.7 million new donors to The Association." - http://www.alsa.org/news/media/press-releases/ice-bucket-challenge-082514.html

So apparently this new form of social media marketing and peer-to-peer challenge actually makes a real difference to one of the largest not-for-profit organizations that is leading the charge against this debilitating neural affliction. Great article here from +CNN  in support of this form of fundraising: http://www.cnn.com/2014/08/23/opinion/bare-ice-bucket-challenge/

There has also been an outcry against the ALS because part of their involvement with embryonic stem cell research. Just to be clear, people aren't intentionally killing babies to provide the fodder for stem cell research. ALL the embryos used come from in vitro fertilization (IVF), most frequently by couples that are having trouble conceiving. "In in vitro fertilization, researchers mix a man's sperm and a woman's eggs together in a lab dish...Each cycle of IVF can produce many [viable embryos], some of which are implanted into the woman and the rest are stored in the IVF clinic freezer. After a couple has completed their family, they must decide what to do with any remaining embryos. They can continue paying to store the embryos or they can defrost the embryos, which destroys them. Some couples may choose to donate the embryos for adoption, though that option is not commonly taken. In some states, couples can also choose to donate the frozen embryos for research. These donated embryos are the source of human embryonic stem cell lines." - more info available here: http://www.cirm.ca.gov/our-progress/myths-and-misconceptions-about-stem-cell-research#2

The ALS has a brief post that describes what stem cells are and why they are vital to the research being conducted here: http://www.alsa.org/research/about-als-research/primer-on-stem-cells.html

And lastly, here are some common myths/misconceptions about the causes and symptoms of Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS): http://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/five-myths-about-als/2014/08/22/70007ef2-2842-11e4-86ca-6f03cbd15c1a_story.html

Political Quiz that allows one to see how their own personal ideals fall on the scale. What's even better is the voter guide that it creates based on your location so can compare your results with the candidates which will show up on your local ballot this November 4, 2014. Highly recommended to all U.S. Citizens!

Cards Against Harassment - I think these are a great way to respond to harassment without being too over the top. People get confused about compliments and harassment it seems (I'm being exceedingly generous with their reasoning). If a person doesn't verbally ask for an opinion on their level of attractiveness, don't volunteer one. Especially if it is a stranger.

Also note that harassment isn't limited to a gender. "For every woman who gets commented upon by men who find her attractive, there are countless women (and men) who get harassed with threats of sexual violence, or harassed for their weight, their alleged unattractiveness, their gender identity, or their real or percieved sexual orientation."

The creater of the Cards Against Harassment, Lindsey, also emphasizes that confronting street harassment isn't for everyone — many women may not feel safe doing so, after all. However, just telling people that catcalling isn't okay goes a long way, in her opinion. "If you're really not comfortable, just make sure to tell your friends about your experiences, particularly your male friends, so they appreciate the impact it has on women," she advises.

She also video tapes her own confrontations with the people harassing her and posts them here: http://www.cardsagainstharassment.com/stories.html
