Remember: vote against amendment #3!
However, after doing some reading it turns out that, "As of Monday, August 25, The ALS Association has received $79.7 million in donations compared to $2.5 million during the same time period last year (July 29 to August 25). These donations have come from existing donors and 1.7 million new donors to The Association." - http://www.alsa.org/news/media/press-releases/ice-bucket-challenge-082514.html
So apparently this new form of social media marketing and peer-to-peer challenge actually makes a real difference to one of the largest not-for-profit organizations that is leading the charge against this debilitating neural affliction. Great article here from in support of this form of fundraising: http://www.cnn.com/2014/08/23/opinion/bare-ice-bucket-challenge/
There has also been an outcry against the ALS because part of their involvement with embryonic stem cell research. Just to be clear, people aren't intentionally killing babies to provide the fodder for stem cell research. ALL the embryos used come from in vitro fertilization (IVF), most frequently by couples that are having trouble conceiving. "In in vitro fertilization, researchers mix a man's sperm and a woman's eggs together in a lab dish...Each cycle of IVF can produce many [viable embryos], some of which are implanted into the woman and the rest are stored in the IVF clinic freezer. After a couple has completed their family, they must decide what to do with any remaining embryos. They can continue paying to store the embryos or they can defrost the embryos, which destroys them. Some couples may choose to donate the embryos for adoption, though that option is not commonly taken. In some states, couples can also choose to donate the frozen embryos for research. These donated embryos are the source of human embryonic stem cell lines." - more info available here: http://www.cirm.ca.gov/our-progress/myths-and-misconceptions-about-stem-cell-research#2
The ALS has a brief post that describes what stem cells are and why they are vital to the research being conducted here: http://www.alsa.org/research/about-als-research/primer-on-stem-cells.html
And lastly, here are some common myths/misconceptions about the causes and symptoms of Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS): http://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/five-myths-about-als/2014/08/22/70007ef2-2842-11e4-86ca-6f03cbd15c1a_story.html
Also note that harassment isn't limited to a gender. "For every woman who gets commented upon by men who find her attractive, there are countless women (and men) who get harassed with threats of sexual violence, or harassed for their weight, their alleged unattractiveness, their gender identity, or their real or percieved sexual orientation."
The creater of the Cards Against Harassment, Lindsey, also emphasizes that confronting street harassment isn't for everyone — many women may not feel safe doing so, after all. However, just telling people that catcalling isn't okay goes a long way, in her opinion. "If you're really not comfortable, just make sure to tell your friends about your experiences, particularly your male friends, so they appreciate the impact it has on women," she advises.
She also video tapes her own confrontations with the people harassing her and posts them here: http://www.cardsagainstharassment.com/stories.html
