In 1999, my park bench pal Steve Cohen, then sitting also on the board of the United States Naval Institute, told me to expect a phone call from an admiral. Oh, and to say yes if offered a chance to write a serialized novel set during the American Revolution. It all came to pass as Steve hinted and the result ran for three years in Naval History Magazine, won an award, and is now voyaging the Internets like the Flying Dutchman... Thanks, Steve. And thanks, America. Such fools, Americans in France, trying to tell ourselves we weren't a cliche for haunting the cafes of Hemingway, Stein, Fitzgerald... So we went west, into the sun, to the coast, into the sea--to an island far from chic Par-eee. Belle Ile en Mer was where we settled into a ruin to remake ourselves and our lives. http://www.donwallacewriter.com/ And eventually this came of it: The French House (Sourcebooks)
