Some notes on formatting drop caps; these are the beginnings of a proposal for the CSS Working Group, and build on work done for (and by and with) the XSL-FO group at W3C before it was disbanded. The design notes in the XSl-FO wiki never made it into the draft spec completely, unfortunately.
These notes are for a proposal for ways to handle drop caps in CSS; don’t try to use them because this is only a proposal, not a description of how things work. A drop cap, or dropped capital, is an initial letter, usually at...

I was looking for a chain and got distracted by a “ball and chain”... on Amazon... whose description says (in part),

This is the real deal, a heavy cast iron ball and chain with a locking leg shackle! [...] the shackle is large enough to fit most children's or adult legs

Is it just me or is it disturbing to find a cast iron ball that can be filled with “sand or lead weights” and whose description explicitly mentions that it will fasten to a child’s ankle?

I like very much that you started out with the licensing issues. I run http://www.fromoldbooks.org/ which has over 3,000 free images...

Two of the biggest problems I see are (1) people using images without attribution and (2) people embedding a link to an image on my site without making it link to me, so that I'm paying for the bandwidth and not getting much benefit. So I've started watermarking the images, as unobtrusively as I can.

Musiv player for Linux systems

Every now and then I look around for a program for GNU/Lunix™ under GNOME that digitize a music CD (e.g. to flac, ogg or even mp3) with high quality/reliability, but can also play the CD at the same time.

Usually people tell me there's some long and fearsome-looking gstreamer pipeline that can do it. Maybe I need to break down and learn how to work with gstreamer pipelines, but is there something better?

Not sure why these stopped showing up in my google plus stream. For that matter, is anyone still here? :-)

Peace - the PX monogram of Jesus Christ, from Chi and Rho, the first two letters of his name in Greek. Even though Jesus was not Greek but Palestinian, the early Christians in Rome used this sign and it's stuck ever since. This Christian symbol appears on the front cover of a book I bought in Paris recently (as one does. . . ?) and would be entirely appropriate for a Christmas card. Or an Easter sign for that matter.

+Dan Scott Thanks, well, not something one can say often but things I was sharing seemed not to be showing up. Thanks for replying! Maybe I'm doing something wrong on the +Words and Pictures From Old Books page.

1730s definition of “Snow” is much cuter than the real thing - or at least, we’re pretty fed up of snow out here.

Going through a box of books in storage in the barn, came across “Pen and Graver - Alphabets & Pages of Calligaphy by Hermann Zapf” - I’d actually been looking for it only a few days ago. A wonderful delight to find (although ,sadly, I’d better put it up for sale!). Tempted to scan some of the pages and try and make fonts, but not sure Herr Zapf would approve. Certain that I could not do them justice in any case.

Introduction
I work for the World Wide Web Consortium, where I head up the XML work.

I live in rural Ontario, in Prince Edward County (Quinte region, near Milford).

Years ago I made a decision to be openly gay online (and later, in real life), because I saw how much it helped other people. Some were _not_ gay themselves, and would say to me, “I have never met anyone gay before, and you seem OK, what is all the fuss about?” The answer was that they were probably surrounded by gay people who did not feel safe in revealing themselves. Others who _are_ gay may be reassured if they see I'm openly gay, married to another man, and didn't get struck by lightning.
