Can't wait till the day heels go out of fashion

High heels - a high price to pay

The trend of wearing high heeled footwear may come today and fade away tomorrow. But the many problems that are caused by wearing them, is really what everyone ought to know.

Heels that are 1 inch high cause 22%, heels 2 inch high cause 57%, and heels 3 inches high cause a staggering 76% of increased stress to the forefoot, that can affect the entire musculoskeletal balance of the body at large.

What problems does high heeled footwear cause?
1. Low back pain:
High heels push the centre of mass of the body forward, thus throwing the hips and spine out of alignment. The muscles at the back of the leg (the calf muscles) contract to adjust to the angle of the high heels, thus becoming tight. This tightness transmits to the muscles at the back of the thigh (the hamstring muscles) which also become tight, thus tilting the pelvis out of its normal position. This causes poor posture, predisposing Low Back Pain.

2. Early Osteoarthritis:
The altered position of the legs when walking with high heels causes excessive load to front and the inner side of the knee, which is the most common site for osteoarthritis of the knee in women.

3. Ankle injuries:
High heels reduce balance, and increase the risk of falling, thus causing twisting injuries of the ankle ligaments, and fracture of the bones of the leg.

4. Metatarsalgia:
High heeled footwear put undue stress on the joint behind the ball of the foot, thus causing the body weight to be distributed over it. This leads to severe joint pain and stress fractures.

In addition to the above mentioned, Achilles tendinitis, corns, buniors, calluses, hammer toes, pump-bump (retro-calcaneal bursitis), plantar fasciitis, mortons neuroma etc. are caused by constant usage of high heeled footwear.

So, for a few added inches of height, must we heighten our problems?
