The old Summer Palace (圆明园) was built in Beijing in 1707 as a gift from Emperor Kangxi to his son Yongzhen. During the Second Opium War in the reign of Emperor Xianfeng, Lord Elgin the British High Commissioner in China ordered the palace destroyed in retaliation to the killings of two British envoys who wanted to negotiate the surrender of Qing forces.

It took 3,500 Anglo French soldiers three days to set the palace ablaze. Many of the treasures in the palace were looted and to these days are still kept in Europe.

Charles George Gordon, a member of Royal Engineers Expeditionary Force that took part in the burning of the palace in 1860 wrote this.

"We went out, and, after pillaging it, burned the whole place, destroying in a vandal-like manner most valuable property which [could] not be replaced for four millions. We got upward of £48 apiece prize money...I have done well. The [local] people are very civil, but I think the grandees hate us, as they must after what we did the Palace. You can scarcely imagine the beauty and magnificence of the places we burnt. It made one's heart sore to burn them; in fact, these places were so large, and we were so pressed for time, that we could not plunder them carefully. Quantities of gold ornaments were burnt, considered as brass. It was wretchedly demoralising work for an army."

Amazing courtyard house (Siheyan) in Beijing designed with a theme to reflect the splendour of old Imperial China.

Courtyard houses were very popular in China during the days of the Ming and Qing dynasties. Siheyuan (四合院), as it is popular known is a four-sided square house representing the cardinal points of north, south, east and west. There is always one gate to every house. Many of such courtyard houses are still found in Beijing along hutongs (little streets) outside the Forbidden City and they are well restored. Some have been converted into Boutique hotels.
