Malcolm Gladwell in David & Goliath says, when it comes to hiring, “the best students from mediocre schools were almost always a better bet than good students from the very best schools." Now we are not mediocre by any means: e.g., we would rank among the top in WWW impact ( http://j.mp/www-Mar13  )
but the approach of some organization to go by old rankings of universities die slowly.

IBM research has chosen to hire at least 4 of our brilliant, recent graduates (alphabetically): Prateek Jain, Pablo Mendes, Meena Nagarajan, Cartic Ramakrishnan (Prateek at TJWatson, others at Almaden). Good going IBM!

Continuing excellence, Kno.e.sis PhDers++ ! Big congrats to Cory!

As Kno.e.sis-ers may know, Cory defended his thesis very recently. He wanted to work on #IoT . He wanted to go to a true research lab (not the "labs" that are increasingly dependent on business/product groups to define their work for them). And wanted to be among other accomplished colleagues. He seemed to have received his dream job.

Cory will soon join the IoT lab at Bosch Research & Tech Center in Pittsburgh, where large majority of his colleagues are PhDs from CMU, working on IoT related research. Given Cory's accomplishments and Bosch's desire to recruit him, instead of normal hiring of a fresh PhD as a Research Engineer, they sweetened the deal as "Senior Research Scientist", just as Cory wanted.

Check out Bosch's IoT play: http://www.bosch-si.com/newsroom/iots/internet-of-things.html

Big Cheers.....Congratulations Cory!

Some of the things happening this week: On Monday, Prof. Shaojun Wang gave a talk at Microsoft Bing on "Direct loss minimization for classification and ranking problems". On Tuesday, Prof. Sheth gave a talk on "Transforming Big Data into Smart Data: Deriving Value via harnessing Volume, Variety, and Velocity using semantics and Semantic Web" at the Services Symposium at IBM TJ Watson. Prof. Hitzler had several engagements at ISWC 2013, including presentation of two papers. Kno.e.sis-CITAR PREDOSE group hosted Dr. Ed Boyer (University of Massachusetts Medical School & Harvard Medical School) to plan for collaborations. And with the IRB approved, our kHealth sensor+mobile+semantic App for Asthma is being readied to be put in the hands of patients.....

If you know DBPedia Spotlight, you know Pablo Mendes.

Pablo's dissertation defense was held yesterday.
Here is his presentation (video will be posted on Kno.e.sis YouTube account soon): http://www.slideshare.net/knoesis/defense-28900047
(check out his extensive work and its impact summarized towards the end!)

We fondly remember the hackathons Pablo started at Kno.e.sis. Pablo has made us proud-- and now you can find him at IBM Almaden Research Center - Big Congrats Pablo!

Delighted to have two significant recent acceptances: Vinh Nguyen et al's paper in WWW2014 (http://knoesis.org/library/resource.php?id=1950)
and Hemant Purohit et al's paper in First Monday (http://knoesis.org/library/resource.php?id=1952). [Significance of WWW is well known. Significance of First Monday: http://academic.research.microsoft.com/?SearchDomain=2&SubDomain=15&entitytype=7 click on Journals).

Introduction
Kno.e.sis is one of the largest academic research groups in Semantic Web/Web 3.0 that is pioneering new techniques in knowledge- and semantic-enabled computing.

Kno.e.sis research focuses on realizing a knowledge society with semantic computing as a key enabler. We are a leading research center in the areas of Semantic Web and semantics-enabled services, sensor, social, mobile and cloud computing. Our work leads to prototypes and their evaluation with the participation of academic and commercial partners, technology development and licensing followed by real-world deployment, and commercialization. Most importantly, our graduates have build exceptional careers in industry research, academia and start-ups.

See See http://bit.ly/www-org1 :: Kno.e.sis's research results in placing Wright State University among top organization in world in the World Wide Area; Ohio Center of Excellence, Member of W3C, etc. with group of well recognized professors in respective fields (http://knoesis.org/aboutus/people/ ; http://bit.ly/www-au )
