Hey Cambridge/Somerville peeps! I have a friend moving from the Bay area to the Somerville area for a Master's program at Tufts and is interested in a room in some sort of shared housing close to the university. He's quiet and nerdy, responsible..Anybody know of anything opening up around July/August?

Wow, this day is being an exercise in "good news/bad news." I guess shouldn't be a surprise that Clipper Card's systems are terrible, but MAN. Word to the wise: if you have autoload set up on your card, DO NOT let the payment method expire. It will be a world of pain, even if all you need to do is change what year your credit card expires.

Delicious braised fennel in white wine pasta dish +Thomas Eng and I made tonight! I had previously found fennel to be a bit of a mysterious vegetable, so in case anyone is wondering what to do with the thing and wants a quick dish:

One medium-sized onion, sliced in quarter-inch-wide sticks

One fennel bulb, sliced in quarter-inch-wide sticks

In a frying pan, melt 1/2 to 1/4 tablespoon of butter and a few drizzles of olive oil over medium-high heat. When the butter has melted, add the onions and brown, stirring occasionally. When the onions have softened, add the fennel and cook until slightly browned and just starting to soften. Add approximately 1 cup chicken stock to the pan and turn up heat if needed so the liquid boils steadily and reduces in volume. When the liquid is almost gone, add approximately 1/2 to 1 cup white wine and keep liquid boiling until it has mostly been boiled off. It may be necessary to turn down the heat. Salt and pepper as needed. The fennel should be noticeably easy to pierce with a fork. If the fennel needs more time but all the liquid has evaporated, add more liquid, either white wine or water. Total cook time should take about 1/2 hour.

Serve over whole-wheat pasta with a nice grating of pecorino romano!
