The Psychoanalytic Society of Caracas (Sociedad Psicoanalítica de Caracas) rejects the Totalitarian Ways of the Current Venezuelan Regime.

Published in “Tal Cual” - a newspaper in Caracas, Venezuela Translation by Daniel Benveniste, PhD.

This week, in the final stretch leading up to July 16th (the date of a citizen sponsored plebiscite on the government of President Maduro), the Caracas Psychoanalytic Society issued a resounding statement declaring its position on the Venezuelan situation, and condemning, from the outset, "all forms of intolerance and violence that have been occurring in our country."
This very brief document with an excellent synthesis of the situation, expresses the tensions caused by so many months of repression, violence and death, and raises a humanist call "to values such as respect for the other, respect for otherness, the individuality of each person, and the celebration of difference as the most intimate expression of a human being."

This group of psychoanalysts opposes the totalitarian discourse, which prevails in the ruling governing party, "crushing those they think of as different or inferior and seeking the extinction of that which is most precious in human beings - their subjective condition." They criticized the government for “Penalizing Dissidence" with propagandistic government support of pseudo-scientific forums such as the recent “peace laboratories” in which political dissent was described as a “pathology in the area of mental health" – an idea which can only be imagined as indoctrination financed by the MINCI (Ministerio del Poder Popular para la Comunicación y la Información – The Ministry of Popular Power for Communication and Information).

The statement of the psychoanalytic group stressed that human rights "must be guaranteed by the state in order to protect ALL citizens of the country, regardless of beliefs or ideologies." Rights today are violated in all aspects, in relation to health, food, freedom of expression, justice and the possibility of leading a full life." All this, they add, has caused a profound deterioration in the physical and psychological health of the population, and has impeded the possibility of growth in the areas of economic, social, and labor development for Venezuelans.
It is important to note that the Psychoanalytic Society of Caracas is part of the International Psychoanalytical Association Trust, an entity that enhances the global meaning of its actions. It is also affiliated with FEPAL (Federación Psicoanalítica de America Latina), its closest Latin American institution.
"We reiterate our repudiation of manipulation through theoretical discourses, emptied of symbolic contents, and the use of force to extinguish the voice of every person that expresses dissent. We call on those who have the responsibility to lead the country and all citizens, to promote tolerance, respect, the coexistence of democratic citizenship and the restitution of the Law as guarantor of the psychic survival of the Nation.
