I think we're starting to see the emergence of the civic web with data standards like #Open311 & shareable civic tech like what's cataloged on Code for America Commons http://www.politico.com/story/2013/04/open-data-shifts-from-apps-to-big-issues-89718.html

Check out DemocracyMap, my entry for the Knight News Challenge. It's a simple website and API that allows people to find and contact all the governing bodies and elected officials that represent them from the most local office to the national level. The submission period closes in a few days, so it'd be awesome if you could upvote (applaud) or comment on this on the News Challenge website to support it.

The current DemocracyMap prototype provides primary contact information for every city, county, and state in the United States as well as contact information for all state and national legislators, all governors, all county officials, and over 100,000 municipal officials.

This whole open government thing seems to be going pretty strong. I'm on my way to the White House to help start the review process for one of the US commitments to the Open Government Partnership (specifically the petitions platform - whitehouse.gov/petitions) and then later this month I'll be on a panel at the first annual OGP meeting in Brasilia to talk about our work with Open311 and open systems for transportation and planning.
