What did I see while sitting on the Gator's Grilled Cheese Emporium deck today? Over half a dozen birds -- Waxwings -- living their best lives and enjoying fermented cranberries.

“Where’d ya get the name ‘Gator?’ Are you from Florida?”

“Mommy, there’s a dog on my frisbee, but the place is called Gator’s. Why?”

“So … who’s Gator?”

Gator’s is named after one of the Shelties (a lot of people know them as Miniature Collies) we’ve adopted from Minnesota Sheltie Rescue. He was a very sweet and special dog, who spent the first 8 years of his life in a puppy mill. Shelties, being a sensitive breed, sometimes take more work and time to recover from trauma, which meant the entire time we had him he kept on a slow but rewarding road to learning to trust. We got the privilege of meeting the dog he would have been had he been loved all his life as much as he was loved after we adopted him. And he showed us more of his heart all the time.

He had a natural curiosity that he finally got to explore. A safe, quiet home. A chance to be part of a “pack” and part of a family. And he got a restaurant named after him, which he inspected once. He went from a life of sadness and obscurity to being a well-loved “business owner.” He got his face on t-shirts, and frisbees, and hanging above the front door.

Not too shabby!
