Discussion  -

I had an interesting discussion with someone involved with setting up Google hangouts here at the Beeb - and in the interests of transparency and discussion I thought I'd share a few points.

He said one of the frustrations the teams have was that it is rather hard to set up -- it takes producers a long time to get guests ready and happy.

That'll improve with time, I hope - it used to take ages to get Skype guests on air, but now it's a doddle. But I do think Google could look again at the user experience for newcomers trying to get their head around hangouts. (And indeed, staffers here who may not be so up on their tech)

More of a problem, though, is a lack of good metrics.

We don't make all our decisions based on numbers, but they are important - we need to know when things work, what gets more people involved and so on.

Compare what happens here to what Facebook can offer -- great breakdowns of engagement, brilliant measures of who are viewers are, what they're talking about and what works.

I've not experienced it first hand - I've not had to set up any hangouts for work purposes - but I'm told we're left a bit in a dark when it comes to measuring success.

As I say, just some informal thoughts from a brief chat - but hopefully of interest.

I think you can also point to other news outlets in the US who have successfully used Hangouts.

I really think the difficulties are perceived more than real. All you really need to use hangouts is a decent web browser and a Google account. The steps required to get a new user engaged in Skype are greater.

Of course, people are now used to Skype, but a lot of users already have a Google account through using Gmail, Youtube, etc.

I will admit that, sometimes, getting the gtalk plugin installed isn't the smoothest experience, but the biggest barrier, in my view, is fear due to non-familiarity.

Can I somehow plug my Tumblr into Plus? Or would that just be irritating?

That would be irritating an remains the reason there is no API access.
