One of my dear friends is stepping off shortly to spend a year in Tanzania trying to help people train better doctors. Here are her initial thoughts and a reflection on what "humanitarian aid" means in today's world. With luck (and perhaps a cattle prod) she'll be passing along more thoughts and observations as the year develops.
I would like to think of my role not as a giver of aid, but rather a colleague in pursuing  development. Over the last two decades I have watched the humanitarian aid industry fumble and stumble and stand up to cry succ...

+Brian Morton I'm all for the period piece bit, but the creepy doesn't agree with me.

"Already I’m starting to see angry posts from gun owners on the forums vowing never to buy Starbucks coffee again. Why? We have no one to blame but ourselves for their new policy. Starbucks tried to remain neutral but we, as a community, acted irresponsibly and disregarded their wishes by dragging their business into the middle of our fight — a fight they wanted nothing to do with."

Donuts at sea.

You will be seeing one of these bad boys in PANDEMIC, due out Jan. 21, 2014. That is all I can say for now. http://gizmodo.com/what-happens-when-the-us-navy-does-a-donut-in-the-pacif-895762600
And you thought your Hyundai had moves. This is the littoral combat ship USS Independence showing off its turning radius last week. Technically it's a display of maneuvering prowess, but you can't help but think it was also a chance for a bunch of able-bodied seamen to say wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeee.

Actually a technique like this was used by the U.S. Navy to drown the motor of a *pirate ship.

NB: I use the words pirate ship loosely, as it was more of a old speed boat than a ship, but pirate boat doesn't sound as interesting.

Woohoo! I wrote things and apparently people liked them.
I'm honestly a little shocked that the two reviews I've read rated "Ashes" as a good intro run but hey, whatever works for your table.

Starbucks saying its not super enthused about people carrying guns is not the same as punching a bald eagle in the mouth. Settle the fuck down. It's not even a real ban it's just a, "Stop trying to say we have a political position on anything besides coffee."

All you need to succeed in America is hard work, determination, and to be born in a geographically advantageous location. Also, always obey the first rule of America: Don't be poor.
