In reply to Kim Hutchison, no for free motion quilting I use a darning foot rather than a regular foot. This allows me to move the quilt in different directions as I quilt, because it is spring loaded so doesn't hold the quilt firmly in place.
Thanks, newbeequilter for your kind comments - I'm aware that I say 'um' and try to stop myself, but my concentration is more on what I'm saying, now how I say it.
In reply to countrywench2310 - I think I tend to get that thump if I am not keeping the speed constant. Doesn't seem to affect the quilting on its own, although it is preferable to keep the speed constant as this gives you more even stitch length.
