Dental Health Quiz: Gum disease is associated with... A. Pregnancy B. Heart disease and stroke C. Diabetes or D. All of the above? D - Al lof the above - Gum disease is caused when bacteria collect on teeth and in the space between the tooth and the gum. Untreated periodontal (gum) disease results in the destruction of the bone that supports the teeth. Pregnant women are very susceptible to gum disease. If untreated, this may result in low birth weight babies. The good news is that gum disease can be reversed but you must act while it is in the early stages. Ask your dentist to check for this. Untreated, gum disease can lead to other serious health conditions, heart disease and stroke, and diabetes.

Healthy Smiles Tip: What we put in our mouths can harm our teeth and cause tooth decay. Plaque bacteria in our mouth use the sugars and starches we eat to make acid. This acid, if left on the teeth, can break down the tooth surfaces and make a cavity. The more often sugars and starches are put in the mouth, the more often acid is coating the teeth.

Healthy Smiles Tip: Dental floss slides between the teeth and underneath the gums to remove plaque bacteria. Floss daily, and always wrap the floss against the side of the tooth as you slide up and down. At your next dental visit ask for a flossing demonstration.
