I just love the experience of going to the Cliff House. The history of the building is fun to learn about, and the views are amazing on a clear day. I happened to recently arrive at a time when the main dining room was just closing, but we were still able to get drinks and appetizers upstairs. All of the wait staff was accommodating, and the clams and cocktails we had were delicious. Try the bloody mary!

Believe it or not, I read about this place when I read Steven Weed's book, My Search For Patty Hearst. I believe he had a drink with a friend here. So, when I visited a friend in Berkeley, we stopped in for a drink. I am a Patty Hearst fanatic. I have nothing but pleasant memories. We had a relaxing time, the drinks were good and refreshing, and the atmosphere was pleasant.

The Cliff House is one of the oldest restaurants in San Francisco. It has breath taking views of the water (on a clear day that is) so I was very much looking forward to try it during June’s SF dine about town. It was busy on a Saturday during lunch, but we were immediately greeted and seated. Although we didn’t get to sit by the window, we were still able to experience the amazing view of the Pacific Ocean! Things kind of went downhill from there. Because we were at the Cliff House for the dine about town menu, we ordered 4 different things off the special menu – 2 appetizer and 2 entree, and opt out on drinks (since we don’t drink alcohol). Maybe because of the dine about town menu, us not drinking or both, the waiter never came by to check up on how we were doing except for when he was delivering our dishes. We ran out of water for a long time and had to wave down a different waiter for refills. The food was mediocre…wasn’t particularly memorable. Restaurants participate in dine about town so people can try them out. And if customers liked their visit, they will return in the future. After this dine about town experience, we will not be going back to Cliff House for sure.

Massive Remodel. Expensive. Swank. Serve calamari only downstairs right, on lower level.

Never go here! Apparently it is a known place for cars to be broken into according to the Police Department yet they do nothing about it, and when you call to report a break in they dont send anyone out. An hour later a police car is seen patrolling. We had an ok experience in the restaurant but it was ruined after only an hour inside coming out to find our rental car broken into and items stolen. It has ruined my vacation and my love of California.

One of the best places to bring friends in town and enjoy food with a view. I've found if you get there early enough the wait isn't terrible. If you are looking for a later brunch make sure to make a reservation. They also have some of the best popovers in the city and you an unlimited basket before your meal arrives.

We love the Cliff House. Sutro's restaurant downstairs is so perfect for a special occasion, and has one of our favorite salmon dishes...it's a classic! Being able to sit against the window -- literally on the edge of the sea -- is memorable and special. We love this place and you have to try the famous popovers! :)

I can't believe my experience (Canned crab) The restaurant was a huge disappointment. I was all ready to eat fresh crab. I ordered the Dungeoness crab sandwich which was the worst quality crab ever (dry, stringy, salty just nasty) and to top off they threw a lot of spring lettuce thrown on the plate nothing special and I paid $28.50. Don't get anything crab it's all cheap canned. My uncle order the fish and chips it was horrible. Frozen breaded fish no flavor or seasonings. Perhaps a new chef? The service was very good. It's not their fault that the food is not good! Maybe breakfast may be different. I kne I should have ordered the hamburger!!!
