this writing life
if we’re honest
can take us to some pretty bad neighborhoods

“face your demons” is just a sound people make when they’re scared
no one chooses
this
fear of shame is fear still

we move through the high grass,
hearts pounding
we take the dark alley
alive to the scent of spoor and the muffled step
the corner eye motion,
the light before the crash

in our true hearts we learn
the names that reek
of blood and bile and
birthing sweat

the ones that come back
are unbeholden
to delicate sensibilities and the disapproving
moue
there is no polite way
to tell the truth

mother and daughter afoot
sloe eyed and honey haired
in the early morning dark
they pass me with soft flip-flop slaps
smiling red popsicle smiles

she rocks in red noconas
warbling west texas
on a japanese six string

black plainsman low
over laughing blue eyes
she sings the cowgirl’s lament

her blond braid sways
to the rhythm of the rails
she’s the q-train rodeo queen
