Johnson & Johnson ordered to pay $55 million in talc-powder trial http://ow.ly/4nlNsp Following a three-week trial in Missouri state court, jurors deliberated for about a day before returning a verdict for plaintiff who was awarded $5 million in compensatory damages and $50 million in punitive damages. The verdict followed a $72 million jury award from the same court in February to the family of a woman who died from ovarian cancer after years of using talc powder for feminine hygiene.
Johnson & Johnson (JNJ.N) was ordered by a U.S. jury on Monday to pay $55 million to a woman who said that using the company’s talc-powder products for feminine hygiene caused her to develop ovarian cancer.

Agree Or Disagree On This Class Action: Starbucks faces $5M lawsuit over amount of ice in its iced beverages http://snip.ly/5lv6a Complaint alleges that a customer who orders a Venti iced coffee will only receive about 14 fluid ounces of iced coffee even though they are expected to receive 24 fluid ounces as Starbucks advertises. The lawsuit she filed is a class action on behalf of anyone who has ordered an iced-beverage from a Starbucks shop in the last 10 years. Starbucks called the lawsuit “absurd.”

UC Berkeley Team Creates Complex Neural ‘Atlas’ Showing Where Ideas Originate in Our Brain http://ow.ly/4nhWm5 The research being conducted by the scientists is mainly focusing on people’s ability to link words with their meanings—the most basic level of brain work. This phenomenon could, hope scientists, some day lead to machines that give voice to those who cannot speak, including stroke victims or victims of neurologic diseases like ALS, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. The study was published Wednesday in the journal Nature. In order to ensure their study is understood better, scientists have produced what they call a “semantic atlas”, something that highlights specific parts of the brain where words, or groups of words, connect with their meanings as each person perceives them.

FAA moves up inspection of Allegiant planes amid mechanical, safety concerns http://ow.ly/4nhhG6 The FAA inspection works to make sure the planes passengers fly in are safe. It's usually done every five years but because Allegiant has been plagued by so many problems, the inspection was moved up by nearly two years. Allegiant has been scrutinized after dozens of reported mechanical problems over the past few years, including reported engine fires and running out of fuel mid-air. The budget airline received a disproportionate number of customer complaints compared to other airlines last year, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation. 629 complaints were filed against Allegiant. For some perspective, Southwest Airlines has nearly 10 times more planes but received 754 complaints in the same time frame.

I Live This Hiring By The Los Angeles Lakers! - Lakers go back to a sweet spot with hiring of Luke Walton http://ow.ly/4ngF8b In their most sensible coaching hire in the five years since Phil Jackson left town, the Lakers announced Friday they have pulled Walton away from his assistant coaching job with the glittering Golden State Warriors to replace Byron Scott less than a week after Scott's dismissal. Surprised it took them that long.
A chant from the past has become a cry for the future.

He has no place to go but up, and didn't he turn down New York because he said he wasn't ready to coach?

Brain of deceased WWE wrestler Chyna donated for CTE research http://ow.ly/4n8Hqr Brain has been given to researcher Dr. Bennet Omalu to see whether there were any effects of chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE). "We want to donate her brain," Anzaldo told The New York Daily News. "We want to know what made Chyna tick." CTE, which is believed to be caused by repeated blows to the head, can be diagnosed only after death via an examination of brain tissue. Dozens of football players who died have been diagnosed with CTE -- including Ken Stabler, Frank Gifford and Junior Seau.

+Tina Willis Thanks for that information and the link. I will definitely put this on my reading list.  I must agree. Growing up, I don't remember hearing about people passing away due to different kinds cancers and rare illnesses.  Eating at fast food places was a luxury many could not afford. Now it seems to be a staple in most children's as well as adult's lives.  I'm convinced that the preservatives and additives of these unhealthy foods is a main cause of many illnesses and diseases.

Airline Pilot Refuses to Let Violinist Carry On A $20M Violin http://snip.ly/4phwe Yes, you read that correctly; $20 million. That is exactly the situation that violinist Rachel Barton Pine found herself in recently, while boarding an American Airlines flight along with her Joseph Guarneri “del Gesu” violin. According to USA Today, that violin was valued and insured for $20 million, making the idea of having to stow such an expensive instrument seem downright insane. Yet that is exactly what the pilot insisted upon. Pine opted not to board the flight instead of taking unnecessary risks with the instrument from 1742.
While boarding an American Airlines flight, the pilot informed a violinist that she couldn’t carry on her $20M instrument.

Yahoo Report: Does WWE's Chyna brain hold the key to help solve the sport's concussion and head injury crisis? http://ow.ly/4nhien Three days before her body was discovered, Chyna posted a 13-minute video on You Tube, filmed in the Redondo Beach apartment where she would later be found. It is early morning and a large part of the footage is her making a smoothie while talking about life in general, but much of what she says is slurred or incoherent.
Jim Munro looks at the growing problem facing the world’s most popular sports entertainment following the death of Joanie ‘Chyna’ Laurer this week

How 10 Years of Fracking Has Been a Disaster for Our Water, Land and Climate http://ow.ly/4nhaxx Plenty of unknowns remain about the environmental impacts of fracking, due in large part to a lack of baseline testing before drilling began, and industry secrecy abetted by lack of sufficient government regulations. But what we do know, compiled in a new report by Environment America Research & Policy Center and Frontier Group, is cause for alarm. The study, Fracking By the Numbers, quantifies the environmental harm caused by more than 137,000 fracking wells permitted since 2005. Because it relies largely on industry-reported data, modest estimates of the average toll each well takes on the environment, and a patchwork of information from state and federal regulators, the report paints a conservative — but still frightening — picture of fracking’s devastation.

Group of former players are appealing settlement of NFL concussion lawsuit http://ow.ly/4nga2L The lawyers representing about 70 former players requested a rehearing of last week’s decision by the a three-judge panel of Third Circuit Court of Appeals. The panel upheld a district court ruling from March 2015 to accept the settlement between the NFL and about 5,000 former players who filed concussion-related lawsuits. The settlement -- which covers about 20,000 retired NFL players and could cost the league more than a $1 billion -- was slated to be certified as early as May 9. Approval of rehearing requests, also known as an en banc petitions, are rare. If approved, the 14 actives judges on the Third Circuit would schedule a rehearing later this year.
