CNN Report: LaGuardia Airport collision is 2nd this week http://ow.ly/5g0J308d15r The plane, a Boeing 737-800, returned to the gate where the passengers were taken off safely and put on another aircraft, Geurin said. They arrived in Denver about 90 minutes late, according to online flight tracker flightaware.com. On Tuesday, an American Airlines plane hit the right wingtip of a Republic aircraft while pushing back from the terminal gate, the FAA said.
A United Airlines flight set to depart from New York to Denver early Thursday morning hit a fuel truck on the tarmac at LaGuardia Airport, according to a United spokesman. It was the second collision of the week.

Trump’s EPA Nominee Rejects Scientific Consensus on Climate Change http://ow.ly/Z1fT308cZHX Senators grilled EPA administrator nominee Scott Pruitt on climate and regulation during his confirmation hearing Wednesday. Senators questioned him intensely on his doubts about climate change and his long history of filing lawsuits against the very agency he has been nominated by President-elect Trump to lead. Given Pruitt's combative history toward the agency — and Trump's promises to promote nearly unfettered fossil fuel development while wiping away regulations controlling carbon emissions — a Pruitt-led EPA could undo or weaken the Obama administration's climate regulations that gave weight to the U.S. commitment to curb greenhouse gas pollution under the Paris Climate Agreement. And that could undermine global progress on climate change and help obscure the threat Americans face from global warming.

August 2015 Colorado Mine Contamination Litigation Update: EPA Says It Can't Pay Economic Damages From Mine Spill http://ow.ly/Clia3080oug Attorneys for the EPA and the Justice Department concluded the EPA is barred from paying the claims because of sovereign immunity, which prohibits most lawsuits against the government. Environmental Protection Agency announced Friday it will not repay claims totaling more than $1.2 billion for economic damages from a mine waste spill the agency accidentally triggered in Colorado, saying the law prohibits it.

Breaking News: Vikings' plane slides into grass after safe landing in Wisconsin http://ow.ly/UJtk307qeZp The Vikings' plane skidded off the runway on a snowy night at Appleton International Airport and slid into the grass while taxiing after landing. Everyone on the plane was fine. But players, coaches and team officials were stuck for several hours before fire officials at the scene used a truck's extension ladder to help the team off the aircraft. The flight usually lasts an hour. "This is very atypical," Appleton International Airport director Abe Webber said. The airport did not have portable stairs and boarding bridges could not be used because the plane was 200 yards or so from the terminal, Webber said. Passengers left the aircraft two at a time.

BLAST latest tool to aid in detecting traumatic brain injury http://ow.ly/95S8308cZYD The Office of Naval Research is sponsoring the development of a portable, three-part system that can measure blast pressure, establish injury thresholds for the brain and analyze potential TBI symptoms. It’s called Blast Load Assessment Sense and Test – BLAST, for short. “A system like BLAST is vitally important because it can help recognize the signs of TBI early and tell warfighters they might need medical attention,” said Dr. Timothy Bentley, a program manager overseeing the research for ONR’s Warfighter Performance Department. “This reduces the likelihood of someone enduring multiple blasts and suffering more serious brain injury. BLAST also is unique for its unique suite of technology.”
ARLINGTON, Va. – Modern body armor better protects warfighters against shrapnel from explosive blasts. However, they still face a hidden threat – the resulting blast pressure and shock wave that

Very Cool Productive Use Of A Drone! How Drones Are Helping Scientists Study the Future of Whales http://www.nbcnews.com/nightly-news/how-drones-are-helping-scientists-study-future-whales-n706996 Researchers at Ocean Alliance, a nonprofit dedicated to conservation efforts, are using drones capture the the breathtaking image with aerial photography — as well as the genetic material in petri dishes. Ocean Alliance created the "Snotbot," a drone they designed to capture both images of the whales and live biological samples of the "snot" the animals exhale through their blow holes. The team mounted petri dishes to the drone's base so that when the drone hovers above a breaching whale, the propellers create a vortex. This pushes the whale's spray down into the sample trays.
The drones capture important genetic material from the world's largest animals — and it's less intrusive, because the whales likely think it's a bird.

Report: FAA not prepared for major air traffic outages http://www.sunherald.com/news/business/article126368289.html The FAA has yet to develop new plans for lower-altitude flights and planes in the immediate vicinity of airports. Progress has been made on new contingency plans for transferring responsibility for high-altitude air traffic from one facility to another in the event of a disruption. But the work isn't complete in part because of a lack of controller training for handling such emergency events, the report said. For example, controllers told investigators they hadn't received refresher training on procedures to be used when radar isn't available. Delays and uncertainties surrounding the FAA's air traffic control modernization program means elements of the program that could help are unavailable, the report said.
The Federal Aviation Administration still isn't prepared to handle major air traffic control outages despite promises to update plans, a government watchdog said Friday.

Very Interesting Report: How “premium” is premium economy? A guide to choosing that upgrade, airline by airline http://ow.ly/Hxkm307neBs Leave it to the crafty airlines to invent a new product—called premium economy—to capitalize on passengers’ trauma of cramped cabins past. Taiwan’s EVA Air and the UK’s Virgin Atlantic were the ones who pioneered the in-between service class in the early 1990s, but the concept really took off this year as fares tumbled and airlines grappled with ways to drum up revenue.
