Southwest Airlines plane makes emergency landing in Florida after engine breaks apart midflight http://ow.ly/n7OJ303Er63 Southwest Airlines blamed an unspecified mechanical issue with the engine and said the National Transportation Safety Board would be investigating what it described as an “uncontained engine failure,” officials said in a statement. The union for Southwest Airlines pilots tweeted a photo of the broken engine and commended the captain for landing the diverted flight safely in Pensacola. “A great job today by our professional @SouthwestAir pilots! The best safety device is always a well-trained pilot,” the union wrote. #NTSBsouthwest
"There was a loud explosion, and the plane started shuddering," one passenger said.

This Is A Surprising Stat To Me - Uber Lost More Than $1.2 Billion In The First Half Of 2016 Alone http://ow.ly/UjUg303C7YH Uber is now valued at about$69 billion. In 2015, Uber had lost at least $2 billion. Revenues in the second quarter (June end) were about $1.1 billion, up about 15% sequentially from the $960 million in revenues for the quarter ended in March 2016. Bookings for the second quarter were $5 billion versus $3.8 billion in the March quarter for a sequential growth rate of 32%. #UberStatistics

EPA: North Texas earthquakes likely linked to oil and gas drilling http://ow.ly/lzFg303ucIu according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s annual evaluation of how the Texas Railroad Commission oversees thousands of injection and disposal wells that dot state oilfields — underground resting places for millions of gallons of toxic waste from fracking and other drilling activities. Aug. 15 report states, “EPA believes there is a significant possibility that North Texas earthquake activity is associated with disposal wells.”
Federal regulators believe “there is a significant possibility” that recent earthquakes in North Texas are linked to oil and gas activity, even if state regulators won’t say so.

Helmets prevent severe head injuries in bike accidents http://ow.ly/oidy303qqEv Millions of Americans ride bicycles, but less than half wear bicycle helmets, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Researchers found that people wearing helmets had 52 percent lower risk of severe TBI, compared to unhelmeted riders, and a 44 percent lower risk of death. Riders with helmets were also less likely to die from their injuries, and less likely to break facial bones, than those not wearing a helmet, researchers report in American Journal of Surgery. In the U.S., there were 900 deaths and an estimated 494,000 emergency room visits due to bicycle-related injuries in 2013, the study authors write. #BicycleAccidentTBI
Despite some criticism of bike helmets for not being protective enough, they do cut the risk of severe traumatic brain injury (TBI) by half when riders suffer a head injury, a U.S. study suggests.

Could This Be A Potential Reality In The Near Future? To combat traffic problems across the globe Airbus has wild plan to introduce flying cars http://ow.ly/6E3l303mhq0 Airbus chief executive Tom Enders said a network of flying taxis might sound like science fiction, but he strongly believed the vision was already taking shape. “In as little as 10 years, we could have products on the market that revolutionise urban travel for millions of people.” “Techies in Silicon Valley invent hi-tech products every day. However, they still do not have a solution for one of their biggest problems: rush hour,” Airbus wrote on its website. “In response, Airbus Group experts are looking skywards to develop radical concepts that will relieve urban congestion.” The aircraft manufacturer said it had experts pursuing a project, known as vahana, to develop autonomous flying vehicles.
JUST when you were getting used to the concept of autonomous vehicles, a company has decided to kick things up a notch.

FAA Tightens Safeguards on Lithium Batteries on Airplanes http://ow.ly/dXxf303DOt1 Regulators relying on lessons learned from earlier problems with batteries to spell out safety rules - Lithium batteries are lighter, contain more energy and generally require less maintenance than nickel-cadmium or other traditional batteries. But experts describe them as more flammable, and recognize they may be prone to internal short-circuits, overcharging or other malfunctions that can result in fires or explosive release of gases. #LithiumBatteryConcerns
Three years after fire-prone lithium batteries led to the temporary grounding of Boeing Co.’s flagship 787 fleet world-wide, U.S. regulators are ratcheting up safety standards.

CNBC In-depth Report Including Six Minute Video: Health companies label thousands of patient deaths as 'injuries' http://ow.ly/w8A2303re6a When is a death ... not a death? In thousands of cases, medical device manufacturers have been allowed to classify patient fatalities as less serious injuries, because the U.S. Food and Drug Administration allows companies to make their own determinations on causality. One patient died a few hours after being implanted with a cardiac stent that was "damaged and stretched." The stent maker called it a "malfunction." #CNBCreport
CNBC and NBC NY found thousands of FDA safety reports where deaths were classified as less serious injuries and equipment malfunctions.

Judge Rejects Uber Settlement, Saying It Lowballs California Labor Claims http://ow.ly/W8yJ303pxMT The settlement came on the eve of the first trial, and Chen’s rejection puts pressure on Uber to come up with more money or risk a jury verdict that could cost it billions in additional wages. Of course, Uber has a long-term solution for that: It will begin testing self-driving cars in Pittsburgh later this month. Many drivers use their own cars and view the service as a source of incremental cash, while others are professional drivers who are employed by limo services or cab companies and use Uber to get customers. Chen ruled that there is a serious question for a jury to answer as to whether Uber exercises enough control over drivers to be considered their employer. #UberLawsuit

Safety Issues: Self Driving Cars! Uber will begin picking up users throughout Pittsburgh in self-driving cars http://ow.ly/WNYZ303mggq Uber and Volvo announced a $300 million deal for Volvo to provide SUVs to Uber for autonomous vehicle research. Eventually the Volvo SUVs will be part of the self-driving fleet in Pittsburgh. Volvo will develop base vehicles for research and both companies will develop autonomous vehicles on their own. Self-driving technology is not ready for the masses. Hurdles include software that is not yet good enough for public rollout, safety concerns raised by state and federal regulators, and uncertainty over society’s readiness to trust robot drivers. But the race is on. Large tech and auto companies suggest they could start selling self-driving cars within three to five years.
The vehicles will have human backup drivers but will transport passengers just like normal Uber vehicles.
