College sees change on Horizon for Mental Health Awareness

Newton Abbot College welcomed Horizon Counselling Services on 15 November as part of their PSHE (Personal, Social and Health Education) provision for the academic year.

Clinical Hypnotherapist and Counsellor, Alan Stokes, ran a series of sessions throughout the day, speaking to students in Years 7, 11 and Sixth Form about his journey into Mental Health provision, the effects of stress on everyday life and tips to deal with anxiety and stress within the College environment and beyond. Students attended presentations and tailored workshops to help identify areas of pressure in their lives, before discussing what they could do to effectively manage them.

The spotlight on mental health is particularly pertinent this year, as the College’s chosen charity is Place2Be, a national charity providing emotional support to children in schools and colleges across the country.

Enrichment Day organiser and Teacher of Geography, David Evans, explains the importance of such a visit: “We are extremely grateful to Alan for coming in and sharing his expertise and knowledge with our student cohort. Understanding the pressures and stresses that face our young people and recognising their potential impact is something we are, as a College, completely committed to. Alan’s visit is just the beginning of a whole process to raise awareness of the mental health issues faced by young people and to equip our students with the life skills to deal with them to allow them to reach their potential as young adults.”

Alan Stokes from Horizon Counselling added “I would like to thank Newton Abbot College for inviting me to share their day. I was impressed with all the staff and students and how they engaged in raising their awareness of the importance of emotional health and well-being and how the College is taking a proactive approach in supporting their students. The College and its staff should be congratulated on their forward-thinking attitude and for supporting the students in this way. I look forward to working with the College and the students again in the future.”

Stoptober

October is the month where people are encouraged to stop smoking. Stoptober has driven over 1 million people in the UK to attempt to stop smoking and is the biggest mass attempt to stop smoking. Research shows that if you can stop smoking for 28 days then you are more than likely to stay smoke free for good.
There are several ways people can attempt to stop smoking. Some people find that medication can help them to quit by using things like nicotine replacement patches and gum, which you can obtain from your doctor’s surgery or local chemist.
Other people find alternative therapies like hypnotherapy can help them to stop smoking.

Sex addiction and Psychosexual therapy

Do you think you have a sex addiction or maybe you feel your partner has?

Sex addiction is defined as 'any sexual activity that feels out of control.' this can include masturbation, use of sex chat lines/rooms, ongoing affairs or multiple affairs or sexual partners and the use of pornography etc.
A sex addicted person will be unable to control the compulsion to carry out sexual behaviours even though they are fully aware of how damaging their actions can be and that there could be negative consequences too.
Counselling and Hypnotherapy can help support someone suffering from an addiction by helping you to bring your compulsions and underlying anxieties around the addiction under control. When you bring your anxieties under control, changes in the brain help make these decisions easier enabling you to take control of the compulsions you are experiencing. Counselling and Hypnotherapy can offer you different ways of learning to live without the crutch of an addiction which can help you to develop new and positive habits to concentrate on instead.

Horizon Counselling services can now offer specialised therapy for anyone who is experiencing a sex addiction or any of the issues associated with one, with our new sex addict therapist Santella.
We can also help partners of people suffering from sex addictions overcome the feelings of hurt, stress and anxiety they may be feeling due to their partners behaviours. Addicts usual can recover quicker when they have a good support network around them helping them to understand their compulsions.
