"The key difference is expertise. People trained to be alert for something hinky will do much better than any profiler, but people who have no idea what to look for will do no better than random."

"This is what works. Not profiling. Not bulk surveillance. Not defending against any particular tactics or targets. In the end, this is what keeps us safe."

What's up with all these politicians with their own domains used as email addresses?  Does that mean they are employing people to maintain servers and email accounts for them, or do they just re-direct to some hosting company?

I'm failing to see how this is a good idea. Seems like a a politician, specially the secretary of state (Clinton and Powell), would be a high profile target for hacking/cracking. Even ignoring that, did they always login to a secure portal to send email through? I would think a lot of email in the state department should be contained inside the organization and accessible only via VPN.

Man, I miss Fantasy Congress.  I was scoring huge after I drafted this idiot.

I'm actually terrified of this asshole's constituents.  People who seriously don't understand what the word "global" means.

The Huffington Post: Senator Who Cited Snowball In Climate Change Debate Cites Scripture To Back Himself Up. http://google.com/newsstand/s/CBIwrIPQ4CA
WASHINGTON -- Senator Jim Inhofe, a Republican from Oklahoma, became the object of global ridicule recently when he sauntered onto the floor of the world's greatest deliberative body with what he declared was persuasive evidence climate change was a ...

How many more of these should we expect out of the Snowden docs?

I'd be pretty pissed off some government hacked/cracked into my personal electronic life not because of what I personally did, but because of who I work for and what I do.

Does the average citizen lack the technical knowledge to be outraged here? Has technology surpassed the ability of normal humans to comprehend and care? Do they just strike it up to the cost of progress and having a computer in your pocket?

What's stopping a rogue NSA employee from selling those keys on the black market so some group could setup the listening posts around wall street and mine the data for insider trading ? Sheer luck of having moral people that work for them?  It's quite obvious the NSA can't detect when it's data is taken and can barely figure it out after the fact. What's stopping bad actors  from targeting/blackmailing these people to get this data?
American and British spies hacked into the internal computer network of the largest manufacturer of SIM cards in the world.

I had to read up on the GSM key derivation, because I was sorta shocked that they're using symmetric crypto for this instead of asymmetric. What's worse, is that in this scenario, the companies are forced to keep the keys in plaintext.   I'd be surprised if the NSA/GCHQ are the only ones who have stolen these keys.

Is Google being sentimental because of the historical significance of this, or was it just the fact it found any old tombstone ?
