Less than 1/3 of OpenStack deployments use the EC2 compatibility API and less than 1/4 use the S3 compatibility API. This is from 197 surveyed deployments: http://www.openstack.org/summit/portland-2013/session-videos/presentation/openstack-user-committee-update-and-survey-results

Most OpenStack deployments are on-premises private clouds. AWS clones are boring. My specific OpenStack deployment looks very little like AWS and has very tight integration to the rest of my infrastructure. This is due to OpenStack being Open Source and having an extensible API and architecture. My organization has pushed changes to the API and others get to benefit from this work.

If OpenStack was just an AWS clone I couldn't easily extend the API or have it changed because it's controlled by Amazon, who has no interest in my specific, private, use case.

What you're asking OpenStack to do is to become another lackluster clone of a proprietary product. No thanks. Let's not make OpenStack the WINE of the infrastructure world. You keep using AWS and I'll continue helping to build something amazing.
Depending upon which analyst or flat earther you listen to, then OpenStack rules. I don't buy this for a second and instead take the view it's most likely to be a dead duck. Why? Well, from its very beginning, when I put O...

Ryan, EC2 compatibility is mainly interesting when trying to compete with AWS, ie. in the public cloud space - where OpenStack is pretty much non-existing. Yes, Rackspace and a few others, but overall the uptake is very limited.

Wow! Didn't know. Thanks for the info! I'm definitely not supporting someone that supports SOPA.

I really wish google+ for apps, and my regular google+ account were the same thing, but I could post with different status. Like: "Ryan Lane on behalf of Wikimedia Foundation".

Heh. Well, I don't really want to merge with my work account. I'd like to have a single identity controlled by myself. In apps, the apps owner can see everything you post, and can delete or edit it too.

I'm fine with that on my own apps account; not so much otherwise.

Man, Google+'s interface is so much cleaner and nicer than Facebook's. I really wish people used this rather than Facebook.

I'm talking at an upcoming CodeChix meetup. I'll be talking about how our infrastructure works, how we scale, and how we are treating our infrastructure like an open source project that anyone can join. Come out!

I'll support Wikipedia in this. It's the right way to go about it, even if it is painful for the users. In fact, I'll drop a coin in the collection box to help make sure ya'll make it through.

Heh. The blocking in Google+ is funny. It shows that "4 new people are sharing with you!", and the blocked person shows up as an empty picture, after I blocked them.
