Bringing the promise of integration, security and empowerment to adult newcomers in Salt Lake County.
Introduction
This fall will mark the 25th anniversary of the English Skills Learning Center (ESLC). The ESLC was founded in 1988 under the name Literacy Volunteers of America – Wasatch Front (LVA-WF).  Initially, the organization offered teaching services to English speakers who had difficulty in reading and/or writing, as well as English for immigrants and refugees.  Then, in the mid-90s, in the face of the rapidly growing population of refugees and other immigrants, LVA-WF started to put more emphasis on helping adult non-English speakers.  Since 2001, we have worked exclusively in the field of English as a Second Language, hence the name change to English Skills Learning Center.

For the past 25 years, volunteers from the Salt Lake Valley have dedicated their time and energy to teaching, under the supervision of the ESLC staff, adults from over 40 countries from around the world basic English. The ESLC has strive to ensure that every refugee and immigrant adult who does not have access to traditional English classes has that opportunity through our non-traditional approach. Classes are taught in the community through our community partnership locations.

Lyuba shares a remarkable moment that took place in her class: I have noticed much improvement from Tara when it comes to spelling and participation. Even though he is an emergent reader he is very willing to get up in front of the class and speak (guided by me). Now that he has two other students who share his first language he is much more enthusiastic and strives to help the others.

With the 4th of July right around the corner, Americans are celebrating our nation's freedom this week. For new citizens and students at the English skills learning center, this celebration is especially important.
