I'm trying to decide what Eli Pariser would say about Google+. In his book and TED talk he warns about filtering the information we're exposed to as an epistemelogical problem, hampering rigorous thought. On the other hand, he seems primarily opposed to users' ignorance of the filters we live behind, and a system which makes filters explicit might be something he'd favor. I suppose I'm trying to imagine what he would conclude, however, mostly to postpone deciding what I believe.
TED Talks As web companies strive to tailor their services (including news and search results) to our personal tastes, there's a dangerous unintended consequence: We get trapped in a "filter bubble" a...

I'm happy the EServer TC Library tonight has 21212 entries. Simple palindromes in database statistics probably shouldn't make me this pleased.
A technical communication body of knowledge (including thousands of works in professional and scientific communication, usability, and technical writing).

Introduction
I am an associate professor in the Rhetoric and Professional Communication Program in the English Department at Iowa State University.

My research studies the history of publishing, particularly the recent history in all variety of media (including music, film, video and software distribution, as well as traditional monographs and serials). I teach courses in rhetorical theory, multimedia production, web development, intellectual property and cultural theory. This work has led me into research in usability, user-centered design, user experience design and interaction design.

I am the founding director of the EServer, a nonprofit online publishing venture in the arts and humanities (among the most visited humanities websites in the world). It has 227 editors, organized into fifty collections to publish over 35,000 works to approximately two million readers per month. It hosts a variety of online resources, including websites about American culture (such as Bad Subjects and Cultural Logic), literature (like The David Mamet Review and The Thoreau Reader), art (such as Cultronix and AgArts), and technical/professional communication (such as The EServer Technical Communication Library).

I am also the director of the ISU Studio for New Media, an interdisciplinary research institute organized to support, further, and coordinate work with digital media currently done by individuals across multiple departments at Iowa State University. In my spare time I have a small consulting business in web, content management, usability, and multimedia development.
