Today is the last day to get PhyloSoC project ideas up on the wiki - the deadline for the org applications is tomorrow! We have a pretty small list at the moment, so if you have something in mind, please do put it up on the wiki.

The wiki page is up for PhyloSoC project ideas! Post an outline on the wiki and pitch your idea on the wg-phyloinformatics mailing list. Summer of Code is a great way to build our phyloinformatics developer community.

We are starting to gear up for a 2014 GSoC application. Do you develop an open source software package for evolutionary biology? Are there features queued for development that would make a good summer programming project? This is the time to start thinking about project ideas!

Hello PhyloSoC students,
We are a good way through the GSoC community bonding period (yikes!), and the coding period begins Monday. Here is a summary of the things that you should have done before Monday:

More coming next week re: expectations during the coding period.

PhyloSoC mentors: please sign up in Melange in the next two days so that we can start matching proposals with mentors. Also, encourage your potential students to get their proposals in well before the deadline!

Potential students: now is not too early to upload your proposals to Melange! Make sure you take a look at the NESCent guidelines:

The Friday deadline is very very firm, so upload early. You can edit your proposal right up to the deadline.

Happy to announce that NESCent will also be participating this year in the GNOME outreach program for women (OPW). We will be sponsoring one women through the program.

https://live.gnome.org/OutreachProgramForWomen#Program_Details

Some key differences between the two: OPW doesn't require that the intern be a student, the projects can include aspects of open-source development other than coding (documentation, UI / UX, marketing or translation) and, obviously, is only open to women.

We're excited to announce that on June 24-25, 2013, Software Carpentry will run a computing skills boot camp in Boston for women in science, engineering, and medicine. With three rooms and six instructors, it will be one of the biggest events we've ever done.

This boot camp is open to women at all stages of their research careers, from graduate students, post-docs, and faculty to staff scientists at hospitals and in the public, private, and non-profit sectors. Registration is only $20; to sign up, or find out more, please visit the registration page at http://software-carpentry.org/bootcamps/2013-06-wise.html or email us. And if you would like to volunteer to help during practical sessions on either or both days, please contact us as well.
