Too much “purely functional” code is written by sequentially executing opaque chunks of machine code. That’s the IO monad in Haskell, Task in Scala, and Eff in PureScript.

This leads to all the anti-patterns we see in imperative coding: mixing levels of abstraction, distributing knowledge that should be centralized, tangling concerns, and much more. Problems that have led to the invention of aspect-oriented programming, dependency injection, runtime metaprogramming, and other noble-minded, if ultimately criminal attempts at fixing what’s wrong with programming-in-the-large.

Fortunately, today’s bag of tools for functional programming has a far better solution: describing effects by reducing them to orthogonal, composable operations, and describing computation with these operations using a computational context like Free.

In other words, in modern FP, we shouldn’t write programs — we should write descriptions of programs, which we can then introspect, transform, and interpret at will.

This leads to a style of programming where a large program is deconstructed into layers. These layers represent different levels of abstraction and different concerns.

Ruby Holt, who has spent 100 years living on a farm in Tennessee, has dipped her toes in the ocean for the first time.

The giant black hole at the center of the Milky Way may be producing mysterious particles called neutrinos. If confirmed, this would be the first time that scientists have traced neutrinos back to a black hole. More: http://buff.ly/1yDPWfq

"Opportunity is missed by most people because it is dressed in overalls and looks like #work ." - Thomas A. Edison

Does #Monday feel a little like this #cat running up the stairs? Are you happy at work?

A recent Gallup poll shows that only 13 percent of people around the world like going to work! A quote from a Washington Post article about this by Jana McGregor: "According to just-released data by Gallup, only 13 percent of employees are 'engaged' in their jobs, or emotionally invested in their work and focused on helping their organizations improve ... The data, which are based on nationally representative polling samples in 2011 and 2012 from more than 140 countries, show that 63 percent are 'not engaged'--or simply unmotivated and unlikely to exert extra effort--while the remaining 24 percent are 'actively disengaged,' or truly unhappy and unproductive."
