Several people and two media outlets have asked me to weigh in on Ms. Dolezal. I passed but have decided to say something, briefly, here as I procrastinate from my real work. :) Rachel is surely an excellent performance artist. And her ability to deceive people, including her social justice allies, into believing that she was black does demonstrate that some aspects of race are performative. But there is a key difference. Although I have African (43%), European (34%) and Native American (22%) ancestry according to my DNA kit results, society would never allow me to claim a white identity. I'm not bothered by that because I like being African-American. But this is a source of anger for many black folks. I understand it, this bristling at cultural appropriation when there is still a lot of othering of real black people. Still, I'm not mad at Rachel. I like the fact that standards of beauty are becoming much more pluralistic and can understand why she would want to be a sister girl. I live it and it is awesome most days. I don't have a problem with her identifying as black. In many ways I admire her cultural dexterity and her fierce social justice advocacy. My only problem with her is the deception. It would have been much more powerful and perhaps transformative for her to say, openly, to anyone along the way that she was born white but that culturally she identifies as black and that this is who she feels she is. I cut her some slack because I'm not sure she is entirely mentally healthy. That's the main thing, there is a lot going on in that family that is not pretty. I hope she uses her new international platform for some social good. Y'all have a good day!
