SpaceX Falcon 9 Sunset Launch

From ~200 miles north of Vandenberg, the launch was clearly visible, including the re-entry burn of the first stage. It was pretty big in the sky. I thought 200mm wouldn't be enough, and instead I think 70mm was too long. Although it was nice to get a few zoomed-in shots of the plumes, it doesn't convey a sense of just how much of the sky was filled by the display.

We went up to the top of the Santa Cruz Mountains (Sempervirens Point) to go watch the launch. Talk about amazing...

Guanajuato is one of my favorite cities in Mexico. This is a view looking down on the city at twilight. I waited until about 30 minutes after sunset to catch the lights illuminating the old, colonial buildings. During colonial times, Guanjuato was one of Mexico's most prosperous cities because there are many silver mines nearby. At one time more than 70% of the world's silver was mined near here. It is also known as the birthplace of Mexico's independence movement and today it is famous for its well regarded university.

Biscuits with Pulled Pork Gravy

Since I had a cup of leftover pulled pork, and about the same amount of drippings from making it, I thought it would be interesting to experiment with using it to make biscuits and gravy.

I always turn to Alton Brown’s recipes for biscuits and gravy, but substituted fat and juice from the pulled pork for the sausage fat. I added a fair bit of salt to the gravy, as the pork wasn’t nearly as salty as a sage sausage is.

The results were quite good. The gravy on its own was a little lacking in umami, but once poured over the pork it was quite good.

This is the window of a tea house at Sesshu Temple in Kyoto. Sesshu was a famous landscape artist in Japan who was inspired by Song dynasty painters in China. It is called Sesshu Temple because he designed its garden. Circular windows are not common in Japan, but they are often found in Chinese gardens. Given Sesshu's fondness of Chinese aesthetics it is very appropriate that the architect of this tea house incorporated this very Chinese element into the building. However, the shoji screens surrounding the circular window are very Japanese and would never be found in China. So this window is a unique combination of both typically Chinese and Japanese elements. I think it makes a perfect frame for the lovely garden one can see through the window.

Several years ago we toured around Baja California. This is Bahia Conception which is located just north of Loreto, the old capital of Baja California. Baja is the only place I have been where the desert extends directly up to the ocean and it makes for some unforgettable landscapes. The cactus in this image at first glance looks like a saguaro, but is actually a cardon cactus which only grows in Baja. I just love the color of the water in this image and the desert next to the ocean looks almost surreal.
